Andrew Colley, Matt McClintock, and Joanna Thompson ZAP the field at the Matanzas 5000

ZAP Fitness is based in North Carolina, but during the winter months you're likely to see ZAP athletes training on the Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course or some other Tallahassee, Florida trail. But on Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, you would have seen ZAP's Andrew Colley and Matt McClintock in Saint Augustine, Florida flashing across the finish line of the 39th annual Matanzas 5K in a dead heat for first place. Another ZAP Fitness star, Joanna Thompson, was the first woman in the race, placing ninteenth overall in 17:05.

The officials gave Colley the win over McClintock, but both runners were clocked in 14:26. About thirty meters behind them, their ZAP teammate Joe Stilin took third in 14:31. Yet another ZAP runner, University of Florida alum Josh Izewski, was fourth in 14:46. Jacksonville, Florida's Kristopher Shold of the PRS Racing Team was fifth in 15:25. Apparently, you need to be a ZAP runner to break 15:00. Brian Shrout of Jacksonville was the first master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 15:50. John Sorensen, the first prep runner in the 5K, was just behind Shrout, ninth overall in 15:57. Sorensen, a senior at Fernandina Beach High, was an All-State cross-country runner in Florida during the 2018 season.

In the 2018 Matanzas, Francine Nzilampa and Lydia McRae had finished just a single second apart, taking seventh and eighth in the women's standings. They were close again in the standings of the 2019 race, with Flagstaff-based Nzilampa running 17:54 for the second women's spot and 28th overall, while Jacksonville's McRae was the third woman and 31st overall in 18:01. Amelia Williams took fourth on the women's side and 37th overall in 18:15. Laura Roberts of Saint Simons Island, Georgia was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 52nd overall in 19:15.

985 athletes finished the 2019 Matanzas 5K.
