Wewahitchka, Florida distance runner Billy Naylor was there in 2012 when the Blountstown Fire Department held their first Catfish Crawl 5K run. Naylor won the 3.1-mile race by close to a quarter mile, running 17:45. Billy Naylor was also there on 18 May 2013 when the BFD hosted the second annual Catfish Crawl. This time Naylor won by closer to half a mile, lowering his own course standard to 16:38. Next year: sub 16:00?The runner-up spot went to Thomas Howell, a rising junior looking forward to running for Blountstown High during the 2013 cross-country season on the Blountstown High School team. Howell's Catfish Crawl time was 19:32. Mark McCarra took the master title, finishing third overall in 19:32.
As defending male champion Naylor continued to own the title, so did defending female champion Hannah Plazarin continue to own the overall female crown. Another rising junior from Blountstown High, Plazarin ran 23:45 at the second annual Catfish Crawl, placing 14th overall and successfully defending her 2012 title. Donia Lanier, an alumna of the Wewahitchka High cross-country team, was the second female finisher, coming in 18th overall in 24:21. Lydia Miles (22nd, 24:58) was the third female finisher and first female master.
Look for the third annual Catfish Crawl on the Blountstown Greenway Rail Trail on Saturday, 17 May 2014.
