Droze and Cox continue the history of the Steve Ellis 5K

Gary Droze and Brian ManryAfter a two-year break since the first Steve Ellis Memorial 5K, the race was back for a second running on Saturday morning, 18 May 2013. This time around, Tallahassee master runner Gary Droze was the victor, running 17:22 over a 3.1-mile circuit of the Florida State University campus. Renee Cox was the top woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 20:47.

Gary Droze and Brian ManryThe race started right after 8:00 AM. From a point between Dick Howser Baseball Stadium and the FSU Circus, over a hundred athletes headed north on Chieftain Way. The Steve Ellis 5K defending champion, Brian Manry of Capital City Runners, went right to the front of the pack. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze went with him. Manry and Droze ran together for most of the first mile, but by the mile mark Droze had broken away. Not letting up, Droze added steadily to his lead on the way to the finish line, ending the race nearly 200 meters ahead of Manry. Manry came in runner-up at 18:05, followed by Michael Martinez in third at 18:56.

Renee CoxGary Droze's 17:22 was faster than the 17:34 Brian Manry had run to win the Steve Ellis 5K in 2011. In the women's competition, Renee Cox also beat the standard set by the 2011 champion, a 21:11 run by Carly Thomas. Cox led the women's field from the start, running the entire race unchallenged on her way to a 20:47 win. Tallahassee master runner Lisa Rutledge was a distance second to Cox in the women's standings; Rutledge placed eleventh overall in 24:12. Behind Rutledge, Jennifer Shafer was the third woman finisher, coming in 14th overall with a 24:46.

2013 Steve Ellis Memorial Scholarship Fund 5K
For almost two decades Steve Ellis covered Florida State University sports for the Tallahassee Democrat. Ellis also ran cross country for Clemson University, so it was appropriate that both the 2011 and the 2013 Steve Ellis Memorial 5K were on the final day of a three-game series between the FSU and Clemson baseball teams. In 2011 FSU dropped the series two games to one. But the afternoon after the 2013 Steve Ellis 5K, FSU beat Clemson to take the series. Hey, this race keeps getting better.
