Hot times in Southwood for Martin and Ness

On Wednesday, 29 January 2014, sleet, freezing rains, and reports of phantom snow covered the Tallahassee region. By the end of the week the usual non-winter conditions had returned. On Saturday morning, though, in Tallahassee's Southwood community, Justin Martin showed up at the starting line of the 2-1-1 Big Bend 5K dressed more for the earlier ice storm than for the current mild weather. You might want to look into a suit of whatever he was wearing, though, because Martin won the five kilometer race by almost half a kilometer, posting a 16:55. At 18:44, Emily Ness of Capital City Runners was the runner up and first woman finisher. Tallahassee's Thomas Konrad was the first master runner in the race, finishing third overall in 19:26. At 26:30, Leigh Graham-Dalzell was the top woman master.


The 3.1-mile race started from the Southwood Town Center, following the old YMCA Trick or Trot 5K course (USATF #FL10091EBM). Justin Martin went right to the front, with Dylon Turner in distant pursuit, followed by Emily Ness and Thomas Konrad. By two kilometers into the race Ness and Konrad had picked off Turner, but Martin was still going away. Through the second half of the race, the margins changed but not the positions of the leaders. Martin went finished first in 16:55, with Ness second in 18:44, Konrad third in 19:26, and Turner fourth in 21:08.


The first-year race was hosted by 2-1-1 Big Bend, the Tallahassee area's crisis hotline organization.
