More than 12,000 athletes were in the streets of Jacksonville, Florida this past Saturday morning for the 41st annual Gate River Run 15K. It was, after all, the designated USATF national championship for the distance. Leonard Korir successfully defended his 2017 title in the race, running a winning 43:07. Molly Huddle took the women’s title at the River Run, placing 21st overall in 47:50.Because it was a national championship race, some of the same players were on hand who had competed in Tallahassee during the USATF Cross-Country National Championship five weeks earlier at Apalachee Regional Park. Korir, the men’s cross-country champion was one. Molly Seidel, who had finished second in the women's race at Apalachee Regional Park, went 49:20 at the River Run to take third in the women's standings. There were runners with stronger Tallahassee connections in the field, though. 126 athletes who call Tallahassee home finished the 2018 River Run.
Chris Haynes was the fastest of the Tallahassee contingent, placing 30th overall in 49:20. It was a sort of homecoming for Haynes, who had gone to school in Jacksonville. However, he lives and runs in Tallahassee now, working at Leon High and winning area races like the 2017 Springtime 10K and the 2017 Rose City Run.
David Graf was Tallahassee's fastest master runner at the River Run, finishing 75th overall in 54:47. Jamila Allen was Tallahassee's first woman in Jacksonville, edging Melanie Leitman for that honor 1:10:57 to 1:11:00. Nancy Proctor was the first woman master from Tallahassee in the River Run, running 1:12:34.
