Kiss and run--Ferrell and Bontrager win Chattahoochee Smoochie

Up and down the banks of the Apalachicola River, Devin Ferrell is winning road races. Last December, the Altha School cross-country runner edged out Brian Corbin for the top spot at 2010 Jingle Bell 5K in Blountstown, Florida. Moving to the east bank of the river on Saturday, 12 February 2011, Ferrell raced to victory at the inaugural Chattahoochee Smoochie 5K. Once again it came down to a kick for Ferrell, but he was fast enough at the end to hold off Blountstown High distance runner Thomas Howell, 20:06 to 20:08. Jody Bontrager of Fitness Evolution was the first woman, placing ninth overall in 23:01. Bontrager led a Zumba warm-up routine before the race, but some of us will always stick to a thirty-minute jog followed by a long stride-out and some light stretching.

145 runners finished the first year event, which was directed by Margo Lamb. The race started and finished at Angus Gholson Nature Park, touring the very hilly streets of Chattahoochee, Florida. Yes, there are hills in Florida, and anyone who doesn't believe it should try running up and down River Landing Road in Chattahoochee a few times.
