"A race like NUN other!" screams a pun on the race flyer for the
St. Teresa's School Nun Run 5K in Albany, Georgia. Well, there are quite a few other 5K races out there, and there are also "Nun Runs" in Chatham, Massachusetts;
Newark, Delaware, and the Bronx in New York City among other places. Still, there doesn't seem to be another "Nun Run" within a thousand miles of Albany, there aren't as many "Nun Runs" as "Turkey Trots," and I don't know if any other Nun Run challenges you to "Beat the Running Nun!"
Unique or not, on Saturday morning, 5 February 2011, Albany's Augusto Soltero won the Nun Run 5K by close to half a kilometer, running 19:03. Dallas Knight, a cross-country runner at Albany's Deerfield-Windsor Academy (c/o 2014), finished second in 21:24. Knight was followed in by Leesburg's Scott Mabee (3rd, 21:45) and the top master finisher, Albany's Brendan Groarke (5th, 22:14).
Leesburg's Jane Spetoskey took the women's title, finishing fourth overall in 22:10, significantly faster than the 22:19 she ran two weeks earlier at Tifton's
ABAC Fitness 5K. Women's runner-up Beth Young of Cordele was close on Spetoskey's heels at 22:16 in sixth place overall. Well behind the struggle for the women's championship, Tiftarea Academy cross-country runner Katherine McGarr ran 23:06 for 13th, the third woman across the line. Leesburg's Sheila Ratliff (30th, 26:17) was the first woman master and the eleventh woman to finish.
