Duane Evans and Georgina Hernandez gave 'em the runaround at Chattahoochee's River Runaround

Chattahoochee River Runaround 5KBuilt on the bluffs overlooking the Flint and Apalachicola Rivers, Chattahoochee, Florida is 60 feet above sea level at its lowest and more than 250 feet above sea level at its highest. With that kind of topography, you'd think that any five-kilometer race you ran in that small town would feature a lot of up and down. But the athletes in the inaugural Chattahoochee River Runaround 5K on Saturday morning, 17 May 2025, were treated to a course that was almost level. Hugging the shore of the rivers, the Runaround so effectively avoided Chattahoochee's hills that the main challenge facing the field was the distance of the race. Master runner Duane Evans met that challenge best, covering the course in a winning 20:56. Georgina Hernandez was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 23:29.

Master runner Richard Reesor took the runner-up spot, running 22:19. Thirteen-year-old Ian Bryner was third in 22:28.

Megan Orcutt was the first woman master and second female finisher, coming in sixth overall in 23:47. Hillary Powell took third in the women's standings, placing seventh overall in 24:20.

89 athletes finished the 2025 Chattahaoochee River Runaround 5K. Ultimate Racing, Inc., of Saint Augustine, Florida timed and scored the race.

Riverfest wins for Hanson and Bontrager in Chattahoochee

RiverFestSneads and Chattahoochee are almost twin villages in Florida. They may be in separate time zones and on opposite sides of the Apalachicola River, but the US 90 bridge over that river keeps them connected. On Saturday, 3 September 2011, Sneads High School senior and distance runner Stephen Hanson crossed the river to win Chattahoochee's Riverfest 5K, clocking 20:56. Another runner from west of the Chattahoochee, Marianna's Mark McCarra, was the runner-up and top master in 21:28. Jody Bontrager of Fitness Evolution took the women's title, placing third overall in 21:49. It was Bontrager's second win in Chattahoochee this year; back in February she was the top woman at the Chattahoochee Smoochie 5K.

25 athletes finished the race, an inaugural event and part of the third annual Riverfest in Chattahoochee.

Kiss and run--Ferrell and Bontrager win Chattahoochee Smoochie

Up and down the banks of the Apalachicola River, Devin Ferrell is winning road races. Last December, the Altha School cross-country runner edged out Brian Corbin for the top spot at 2010 Jingle Bell 5K in Blountstown, Florida. Moving to the east bank of the river on Saturday, 12 February 2011, Ferrell raced to victory at the inaugural Chattahoochee Smoochie 5K. Once again it came down to a kick for Ferrell, but he was fast enough at the end to hold off Blountstown High distance runner Thomas Howell, 20:06 to 20:08. Jody Bontrager of Fitness Evolution was the first woman, placing ninth overall in 23:01. Bontrager led a Zumba warm-up routine before the race, but some of us will always stick to a thirty-minute jog followed by a long stride-out and some light stretching.

145 runners finished the first year event, which was directed by Margo Lamb. The race started and finished at Angus Gholson Nature Park, touring the very hilly streets of Chattahoochee, Florida. Yes, there are hills in Florida, and anyone who doesn't believe it should try running up and down River Landing Road in Chattahoochee a few times.
