Justin Tracy and Katelyn Lancaster cut to the chase at the "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K

At Sallas Mahone Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday morning, 16 March 2019, athletes assembled at the starting line of the tenth annual "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K. Among them were Justin Tracy and Ryan Kelly, ready for a rematch of their duel in the ninth annual race, where Tracy outran Kelly 18:07 to 18:25. This time it wasn't as close. Tracy blew away the field with a 17:36, while Kelly was runner-up in 18:51. Katelyn Lancaster edged Morgan Long for the women's title, 22:47 to 22:52.

It was Tracy's second straight win at the "Scissors" race, and his 17:36 was very nearly a new event record. Only Scott Gardner has posted a faster 5K at the "Scissors," a 17:33 winning time at the inaugural race in 2010. Runner-up Ryan Kelly, the Valdosta High cross-country coach, has four "Scissors" wins to his credit, but this was his first time winning top master runner honors at the race. Behind Tracy and Kelly, Chase Meade outkicked Josh Davis for third place, 19:46 to 19:47.

Katelyn Lancaster, a junior on the cross-country team at Valdosta High, had placed third in the women's standings of two previous "Scissors" races, once in 2016 and again in 2018. 22:47 in 2019 was fast enough to put Lancaster on top of the "Scissors" women's division for the first time. In the 2018 race, Morgan Long had been over a minute behind Lancaster. She trimmed that margin to a few seconds in 2019, finishing as the women's runner-up and tenth overall in 22:52. Tracy Cole was the third woman and eleventh overall in 23:07. Angie Davis was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, sixteenth overall in 24:35.

183 athletes finished the 2019 "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K. The race is an annual fundraiser for the art department of Sallas Malone Elementary School.

Tracy and Smith were a cut above the rest at the "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K

On Saturday morning, 17 March 2018, Ryan Kelly and Dan Butzin were on the starting line of the ninth annual "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K. Butzin was the defending champion of the race, having won in 2017. Kelly was a four-time champion of the Scissors 5K, with wins in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016. But neither Butzin nor Kelly was first across the finish line in 2018. Justin Tracy had that honor, winning the race in 18:07. Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta took the Scissors 5K women's title for the second year in a row, placing eighth overall in 21:46.

Until recently Justin Tracy was a Maine athlete, running cross-country and track first at Mount Blue High School and then at the University of Maine. He is definitely already making his mark on Valdosta distance running--Tracy's 18:07 is the fastest Scissors 5K winning time since 2011.

80 meters behind Tracy, Ryan Kelly was second in 18:25. Parker Childree was third in 19:06, and Parker Jackson, an eighth-grader on the Valdosta Middle School cross-country team, took fourth in 19:11. Rick Mazurkiewicz was the fastest master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 19:56. Scissors 5K defending champion Dan Butzin was seventh in 20:48.

Kelly Lunceford was the second woman and tenth overall in in the women's standings, Valdosta High sophomore cross-country runner Katelyn Lancaster was the third woman and tenth overall in 22:25. Valdosta High sophomore cross-country runner Katelyn Lancaster was third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 22:35.

195 athletes finished the 2018 "Don't Run With Scissors!" 5K. The race is an annual fundraiser for the art department of Sallas Malone Elementary School.
