Robbins and Smoot outrun their elders at Jogging For James

Stephen RobbinsAt Valdosta's "Jogging For James" 5K on Saturday, 25 June 2011, fourteen-year-old Stephen Robbins of Cairo and fifteen-year-old Mary Alice Smoot of Valdosta won the overall male and overall female championships, leaving runners of more advanced years to compete for lesser honors such as age-group wins and master runner titles. Those master spots went to Valdosta's Todd Smoot (3rd, 18:13) for the men and April Scruggs (13th, 23:23) for the women.


In deference to the south Georgia summer, the race started at 7:30am. The route was the same on which Robbins and Valdosta's Masked Avenger had tangled a few weeks earlier in the Valdosta Memorial Day 5K, where they had finished behind Chris Rice. Soon after the start of the June 25 5K, Todd Smoot was setting the pace, with the Masked Avenger at his shoulder. Juan and Jose Castanon of Hahira, Georgia followed closely. Stephen Robbins initially trailed the four front-runners by a few steps, but soon made a bid for the lead. Smoot took Robbins' challenge, leaving the Avenger and the Castanons behind. But Robbins broke away from Smoot and went on to a 17:55 win. The Avenger reeled in Smoot to take second, 18:11 to 18:13, while Castanon hung on to finish a distant fourth in 19:24.


In the distaff division, Mary Alice Smoot only led the beginning, the middle, and the end of the race, finishing the race with over a 300-meter lead. Smoot placed 10th overall in 21:55, crossing the line nearly a minute and a half before female runner-up and top woman master April Scruggs.


Proceeds of the race benefited the James Eunice Charity Fund, used to support scholarships and needs in the community.
