A dozen runners survived Friday's semi-final round, earning the right to run for the title on Saturday. "Cautious" is the most charitable description of the early pace; Scott Nicol of the University of Calgary Athletic Club found himself the leader-by-default as the runners coasted around the track. Canadian Olympian Brannen ran just off the pole, immediately behind the leaders. Taylor Milne was right behind Brannen. Four weeks earlier Milne had set the Canadian record for 2000 meters, running 5:01.57.
Coming up on 700 meters, Peter Corrigan decided to do something about the leisurely pace and surged into the lead. Reacting to the move, Milne abandoned his spot behind Brannen to chase Corrigan. Brannen swung out from the pole to follow Milne. Brannen was still stalking Milne going into the last lap when Milne moved into the lead. Geoff Martinson followed the two around the track. 150 meters out, Brannen attacked. Milne fought back, but on the homestretch Brannen inched ahead, beating Milne 3:50.33 to 3:50.40. Martinson trailed in third at 3:50.74.
The Calgary meet was also the selection trials for the Canadian teams going to the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, Korea (27 August-4 September 2011), and the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico (14-30 October 2011).
