Three weeks before the James Eunice 5K, Watson had wrapped up his middle school track season, running a 5:05.29 1600 and a 2:22.84 800 in Tifton, Georgia. Before track season he had appeared on the Valdosta roads in December at the Ugly Sweater 5K, where he finished runner-up in 20:10.
2016 James Eunice 5K champion Dan Butzin of Valdosta was second in the 2017 race, running 18:56. Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz was the top master in the 5K, placing third overall in 21:37.
Vanessa Spry of Valdosta finished second in the women's standings behind Davis, coming in sixth overall in 22:50. Pavo, Georgia athlete Pollyanna Bass was the top woman master and third female finisher, seventh overall in 22:56.
60 athletes finished the sixth annual James Eunice Legacy 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
