A big shake-up in the lists was expected. The Palace Saloon 5K is traditionally a fast race, and Stan Linton and Chris Haynes were on the starting line. The leading performance for the year going into the Palace was Matt McCurdy's 16:27. Haynes was coming off a win at the Springtime 10K on 1 April 2017, a race where he had gone 32:51--that is, two back-to-back 5K runs each faster than 16:27. Haynes had also run 15:56 in the 2016 Palace. Linton wasn't at the Palace in 2016, but he had won the race in 2013, running 15:46. Linton was also Tallahassee's 5K leader for the year in 2014 (15:24) and 2016 (15:29).

Based on that history, expectations were high for Linton and Haynes. Nevertheless, the two athletes exceeded those expectations. Linton's 15:16 was his fastest 5K ever on the Tallahassee roads. Haynes also ran faster than he ever had before in the Capital City, going 15:43. Those marks put Linton and Hayes first and second on the updated men's performance list.
Aside from Linton and Haynes, ten other men in the top twenty-five have their spot in the rankings on the merit of their Palace times. One of those is Bryan Koon, who has the best time by a master runner so far in 2017, the 17:19 he ran at the Palace. Koon takes over the ninth spot on the men's list.

Just as Stan Linton and Chris Haynes improved on their past performances at the Palace, so did Ani Veltcheva. The seventh-grader from Gainesville, Florida's Abraham Lincoln Middle School had run 18:13 at the race in 2016; she lowered that to 17:58. The only female athlete to run a faster road 5K in Tallahassee so far this year is Veltcheva herself. Her 17:35 at the Run For The Cookies 5K continues to lead the women's list, and no other woman has broken 18:00 this year. The athlete closest to being another sub-18:00 performer is Florida State alumna Adriana Piekarewicz, who vaulted into the second spot on the list after going 18:15 at Palace. Behind Piekarewicz at the Palace, Katie Sherron ran 18:31, equaling the mark of the #3 performer on the women's list, Sheryl Rosen.

Thirteen of the top 25 athletes in the women's rankings ran their best performance of 2017 at the Palace Saloon 5K. Actually, I should say there best performance of 2017 as of today. Well over eight months remain in the year, months filled with racing opportunities. We'll see how the rankings change along the way. So before they change again, check out the lists:
