Caleb Watson shows some heart on the streets of Douglas

Caleb Watson returned home to Douglas, Georgia on Saturday morning, 17 February 2018, for the 10K at the nineteenth annual Heart-to-Heart Run. Watson, a cross-country runner at Valdosta State University, won the 6.2-mile race in 36:36, finishing a mile ahead of the next runner. Axson, Georgia master runner Tashiba Peoples took the women's title, placing third overall in 46:47.


Watson had finished three seconds behind the winner, Cody Reid, in the 2017 race, the first year the 10K was contested at the Heart-to-Heart Run. Jacory Bazell was runner-up in the 2018 race; the Macon, Georgia athlete running 43:36. Vicente Guerrero of Nichols, Georgia was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 47:47. Jose Salinas of Douglas was the first male master and fourth male finisher, fifth overall in 48:44.


Douglas master runner Maria Highsmith was the second woman and sixth overall in 50:56. Stephanie Deas, another Douglas master runner, was the third female finisher and eighth overall in 55:50.


25 athletes finished the 10K.

Coffee High cross-country runners swept the 5K at the Heart-to-Heart Run, with frosh Cameron Watson winning the race for the second year in a row, while sophomore Abbey Arnett captured the women's crown. Watson covered the course in 17:53, and Arnett was fourth overall in 21:08.


Dawson Bussey, a junior on the Atkinson County High cross-country squad, took second overall in 19:29. Robert Beecher of Surrency, Georgia was third in 21:03. Shaun Soper of Waycross, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth in the men's standings and sixth overall in 23:09.


Liz Graves of Douglas was the second woman and seventh overall in 23:19. Maddie Harper was the third female finisher and twelfth overall in 25:50. Trish Watson was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, fifteenth overall in 26:35.


83 athletes finished the 2018 Heart-to-Heart 5K.

A win for Watson and a fourth title for Golden at Tifton's Run For Love

2017 Run For LoveTift County cross-country hosted the 28th annual Run For Love 5K at the Tifton, Georgia campus of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College on Saturday evening, 5 August 2017. The event isn't quite 30 years old yet, and the top runners in the race are even younger. Nineteen-year-old Caleb Watson of Douglas, Georgia, an Armstrong State University cross-country runner, won the 5K in 18:31. Tift County High cross-country runner Emily Golden took the women's title for the fourth year in a row, placing tenth overall in 21:37. 110 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.


The Run For Love 5K course starts and finishes on the ABAC campus, with the middle portion of the race taking the runners past the cattle farms next to the college. The cows got to see quite a race in 2017, as Caleb Watson, J. D. Bengston, and Cameron Watson battled up front for the win. It was still close at the finish line, but Caleb Watson, a runner on the Armstrong State University cross-country team, grabbed the win in 18:31. A few steps back, Bengston edged Cameron Watson for second, 18:33 to 18:34. Bengston and Cameron Watson are both frosh cross-country runners, Bengston at Tift County High and Watson at Coffee High. Tifton's Bret Wagenhorst was the fastest master runner in the race, placing seventh overall in 20:56.


Including the women's winner, sophomore Emily Golden, most of the top ten women were Tift County cross-country runners. Second in the women's standings, however, went to a Coffee High harrier, sophomore Abbey Arnett. Arnett was sixteenth overall in 23:21. Tift County senior Ashlee Golden, women's champ of the 2013 Run For Love 5K, was the third woman and eighteenth overall in 23:38. Tift Middle Schools eighth-grader Ainsley Toews was the fourth woman and twentieth overall in 23:52. Penny Peters of Tifton was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, 27th overall in 25:32.

Watson and Woods are faster than fashion faux pas at the Ugly Sweater 5K

VLPRA Ugly Sweater 5KThe latest holiday gimmick seems to be the ugly sweater event. Ugly sweater contests, ugly sweater parties, and even ugly sweater runs. The Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority joined that movement on Saturday morning, 24 December 2016, by hosting VLPRA's first Ugly Sweater 5K in Valdosta, Georgia's Freedom Park. Douglas, Georgia athletes swept the race, winning both the overall male and overall female titles. Caleb Watson, a Coffee County High alum currently in his first year of running for the Armstrong State Pirates, won the race in 18:17. Gracie Woods, an eighth-grader on the Coffee County Middle School cross-country team, took the women's title in 21:46, placing fourth overall.


Cameron Watson, another Coffee County Middle School harrier, was the overall runner-up, running 20:10. Milo Mirate of Valdosta, Georgia was third overall in 21:41.


Valdosta's Kelly Davis was second in the women's standings, placing sixth overall in 23:40. Victoria Harlow was the third woman in the race and fourteenth overall in 27:08.


The fastest master runner in the Ugly Sweater 5K was Wayne Kountis of Tifton, Georgia. Kountis was tenth overall in 24:59. Douglas, Georgia's Trish Watson was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, seventeenth overall in 27:27.


50 athletes finishes VLPRA's 2016 Ugly Sweater 5K. A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.
