Dylan Dixon and Juana Santos dominate in Douglas at the Heart-to-Heart 5K

For its 27th annual Heart-to-Heart Run, Coffee Regional Medical Center made some changes. The 10K was dropped from the program and the event was moved from the trails of General Coffee State Park back to the streets of Douglas, Georgia. As ever, though, there was a Heart-to-Heart 5K, and on Saturday morning, 15 February 2025, Dylan Dixon won that race by almost 800 meters, running 16:38. Juana Santos was the first woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 23:43.


Dixon had a previous Heart-to-Heart win; he had won the Heart-to-Heart 10K in 2022 when he was still a cross-country runner at Bacon County High. Since then, Dixon had gone on to run for South Georgia State College. At the time of the 2025 Heart-to-Heart, he was on the roster of the men's cross-country squad at Georgia College, where he was studying computer science.


The first master runner in the 5K was Miguel Rivas, who finished second overall in 20:45. Master runner Heriberto Luga took third overall in 20:52.


Abbie Humphries was runner-up on the women's side, coming in fourteenth overall in 26:00. Stephanie Deas was the first woman master and third female finisher, sixteenth overall in 26:17. Deas had been the women's champ of the Heart-to-Heart 10K in 2023.


82 athletes finished the 2025 Heart-to-Heart 5K. Milestone Race Authority timed and scored the event.

Dylan Dixon and Brayden Bailey were tough on the trails at Heart-to-Heart

After two decades of conducting its Heart-to-Heart Run as a road race on the streets of Douglas, Georgia, Coffee Regional Medical Center moved the event to General Coffee State Park in 2020, transforming it into a trail race. When it comes to trail racing, bet on a cross-country runner. Two cross-country runners demonstrated that on Saturday morning, 26 February 2022, taking top honors in the Heart-to-Heart 10K Trail Race. Dylan Dixon, a junior-year harrier on the Bacon County High team, won the race by almost 400 meters, running 43:30. Brayden Bailey, a Coffee High senior, won the women's division of the 10K for the second year in a row, placing third overall in 48:27.


Miguel Rivas finished runner-up in the 6.1-mile race, going 45:16 on the trails. Vicente Guerrero was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 51:57. John Harrison was the top master runner and seventh male finisher, coming in eighth overall in 57:03.


Tabetha Duncan placed second on the women's side and tenth overall in 58:46. Kristy Music was the first woman master and third female finisher, eleventh overall in 59:39.

Twelve-year-old Mario Howard won the 5K at the 2022 Heart-to-Heart Run; his 25:44 was more than a minute and a half faster than the time he had posted in the 2021 race. Placing second overall in 26:22, Shawn Lee was the first master runner in the race, but only by a few steps. Right behind him at 26:26 was master runner Libby Dodd, the first woman in the 5K and third overall. Master runner Derrick Bailey was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 26:47.


Chloe Ferris, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at Coffee Middle School, placed second in the women's division and seventh overall in 29:48. Brooke Floyd was the third female finisher and ninth overall in 29:58.

Ryan Kelly and Kate Merritt were tough on the trails in General Coffee State Park

Two US Highways run through Coffee County, Georgia, but General Coffee State Park isn't located on either of them. The park isn't on what you'd call the beaten path. It was even less accessible on Saturday morning, 29 February 2020--according to the park website, a bridge across the Satilla River was closed, shutting down one of the more direct routes to General Coffee. The website further reported that:

The East River Swamp Trail is partially closed due to high water levels in the Seventeen Mile River. This closure does not affect the planned race route for the Heart to Heart 5/10 K.

Perhaps the park was remote, and maybe some trails were flooded, but more than a hundred athletes still made it for the Heart-to-Heart Run. In the ten-kilometer event, the fastest on the trails was Lake Park, Georgia master runnner Ryan Kelly, who posted a winning 38:17. The first woman in the 6.2-mile race was Kate Merritt, fifth overall in 48:55.


For years, Coffee Regional Medical Center had hosted the Heart-to-Heart Run on the streets of Douglas, Georgia. 2020 was the first year CRMC moved the race six miles east to the trails of General Coffee State Park. Some years the Heart-to-Heart Run had included both a ten-kilometer and a five-kilometer race; other years there had only been a five-kilometer event. Before 2020, the most recent Heart-to-Heart 10K had been the 2018 race, won by Valdosta State University cross-country runner Caleb Watson. When the 10K returned in 2020, Watson was there, and so was Valdosta High cross-country coach Ryan Kelly, who had won the Heart-to-Heart 5K in 2013.


Harriers Watson and Kelly left the rest of the 10K field far behind, but Kelly reached the finish line first, beating Watson 38:48 to 38:58. Miguel Rivas took third in 46:42. Master runner Bret Campbell finished fourth overall in 48:45.


In 2019 the 5K was the longest option available at Heart-to-Heart, so Kate Merritt raced that, winning the women's title. In 2020, just months after her frosh year cross-country season at Coffee High, Merritt moved up to the Heart-to-Heart 10K. She was the top woman in the longer race, running 48:55. Caitlin Mixon edged Katie Roberts for the runner-up spot in the women's standings, 53:03 to 53:04. Mixon and Roberts were ninth and tenth overall. Maria Highsmith was the top woman master and fifth female finisher in the 10K, placing nineteenth overall in 1:02:37, just ahead of female master runner Stephanie Deas (20th, 1:02:43).

Cameron Watson, a junior-year cross-country runner at Coffee High, won the Heart-to-Heart 5K for the third year in a row, covering the 3.1 mile in a winning 19:00. Another Coffee High harrier, sophomore Carter Young, placed second in 19:28, a step or two ahead of Ryan Campbell (3rd, 19:30). Allen Travelstead was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing tenth overall in 23:01.


Ellie Perkins, a senior on the Coffee High cross-country team, was first in the women's standings of the 5K, placing 14th overall in 28:08. Master runner Heidi Hines was the women's runner-up, sixteenth overall in 28:35. At 29:11, master runner Trish Watson was the third female finisher and eighteenth overall in 29:11.


82 athletes finished the 2020 Heart-to-Heart 5K.

Carter Young and Kate Merrit show that young hearts run fast at the Heart-To-Heart 5K

Saturday, 23 February 2019, was a good morning for cross-country runners at the Heart-to-Heart 5K in Douglas, Georgia. Carter Young, a frosh-year member of the Coffee High cross-country team, won the race in 18:04. Kate Merritt, an eighth-grader on the Coffee Middle School cross-country squad, took the women's title, placing eighth overall in 22:11.


Carter Young wasn't the only harrier up front. His Coffee High teammate, sophomore Garrett Mancil, was second in 19:03. Briley Reyes, a frosh-year cross-country runner for Jeff Davis High, was third in 20:28.


Jose Salinas was the fastest master runner in the field and the eighth male finisher, ninth overall in 22:22.


Alexandra Uribe, the eighth-grade ace of the Jeff Davis Middle School girls' cross-country team, placed second in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 24:35. Trish Watson was the first woman master and third female finisher, 24th overall in 25:42.

Caleb Watson shows some heart on the streets of Douglas

Caleb Watson returned home to Douglas, Georgia on Saturday morning, 17 February 2018, for the 10K at the nineteenth annual Heart-to-Heart Run. Watson, a cross-country runner at Valdosta State University, won the 6.2-mile race in 36:36, finishing a mile ahead of the next runner. Axson, Georgia master runner Tashiba Peoples took the women's title, placing third overall in 46:47.


Watson had finished three seconds behind the winner, Cody Reid, in the 2017 race, the first year the 10K was contested at the Heart-to-Heart Run. Jacory Bazell was runner-up in the 2018 race; the Macon, Georgia athlete running 43:36. Vicente Guerrero of Nichols, Georgia was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 47:47. Jose Salinas of Douglas was the first male master and fourth male finisher, fifth overall in 48:44.


Douglas master runner Maria Highsmith was the second woman and sixth overall in 50:56. Stephanie Deas, another Douglas master runner, was the third female finisher and eighth overall in 55:50.


25 athletes finished the 10K.

Coffee High cross-country runners swept the 5K at the Heart-to-Heart Run, with frosh Cameron Watson winning the race for the second year in a row, while sophomore Abbey Arnett captured the women's crown. Watson covered the course in 17:53, and Arnett was fourth overall in 21:08.


Dawson Bussey, a junior on the Atkinson County High cross-country squad, took second overall in 19:29. Robert Beecher of Surrency, Georgia was third in 21:03. Shaun Soper of Waycross, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fifth in the men's standings and sixth overall in 23:09.


Liz Graves of Douglas was the second woman and seventh overall in 23:19. Maddie Harper was the third female finisher and twelfth overall in 25:50. Trish Watson was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, fifteenth overall in 26:35.


83 athletes finished the 2018 Heart-to-Heart 5K.

Bonilla and Clemons are hard to beat at Heart-to-Heart

Cody Reid won Coffee Regional Medical Center's annual Heart-to-Heart 5K in both 2014 and 2015. But on Saturday morning, 20 February 2016, the Coffee High senior was foiled in his attempt at a third straight win by Roberto Bonilla, Jr. Bonilla--a Jesup, Georgia master runner--won the 3.1-mile race through the streets of Douglas, Georgia in 17:02. Grant Cook, a frosh cross country runner at Telfair County High, was third in 18:10. Coffee High senior Caleb Watson took fourth in 18:21, and Appling County High frosh Frankie Williams placed fourth in 18:32.


Leslie Clemons of Fitzgerald, Georgia took the women's title; the Colony City athlete finished twentieth overall in 23:25. Carmen McGahee, a junior on the Coffee High cross country team, was second in the women's standings, coming in 22nd overall in 23:37. Coffee Middle School eighth-grader Abby Arnett was third on the women's side, 24th overall in 23:54. Ahsley Graves was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 30th overall in 25:06.


115 athletes finished the 2016 Heart-to-Heart Community 5K. Net proceeds of the race benefit the Coffee Regional Medical Center Foundation's Heart to Heart Scholarship Program.

Coffee harriers Reid and Moorman repeat at Heart-to-Heart

Located comfortably close to General Coffee State Park, Douglas, Georgia, is home to South Georgia State College, the Douglas Rail Trail, and Coffee Regional Medical Center. Each year, the medical center hosts the annual Heart-to-Heart Community 5K, most recently held on Saturday morning, 21 February 2015. Douglas is also home to Coffee High School, whose cross country teams produced the champions of the 2015 Heart-to-Heart 5K--junior Cody Reid, the top male and overall winner at 17:15, and Hannah Moorman, the female winner at 23:01.


Reid, who was defending his 2014 title in the race, wasn't the only Coffee High Trojan in the top ten. Hinesville, Georgia, master runner Robert McCoy took the runner-up spot in 18:07, but he was followed by Coffee sophomore Juan Brockington in third at 19:01 and Coffee junior Caleb Watson in fourth at 19:06.


Like Cody Reid, Hannah Moorman was also a previous winner of the event. Moorman had won the women's title at the race in 2010 when it was a fall affair known as the Miles For Smiles 5K. In the 2015 running, Waycross, Georgia, athlete Ashley Forbus was runner-up on the women's side, finishing 16th overall in 23:24. Third in the women's standings went to Heidi Hines of Douglas, 18th overall in 23:34. The fourth woman finisher and first woman master was Terry Tatum of Nahunta, Georgia, 21st overall in 23:51.


137 athletes finished the 2015 Heart-to-Heart Community 5K. Proceeds of the race benefit the Coffee Regional Medical Center's cardiac rehabilitation program.
