Wallace and Eagen are champion Deer Runners

Master runner Jay Wallace won the Deer Run For Education 5K, held Saturday, 6 November 2010 at Deer Lake Middle School in Tallahassee, Florida. Wallace ran 17:08, finishing over 300 meters ahead of runner-up Tony Guillen (18:20), a replay of their duel at the Shamrock Scurry this past spring. Allison Eagen placed fifth overall in 19:36 to finish as the top woman, leading the second woman in, Claire Fruchtnicht (13th, 21:57), by about half a kilometer. Coming off of a win two days earlier at the FSECC 5K, Brook Pace (19th, 23:42) was third woman finisher. Alva Striplin (27th, 24:52) was the top woman master and fourth woman across the finish line.

Wallace and Stevens tear up the trails at "Salute to Prefontaine"

You never know what you're going to find at the Salute to Prefontaine 5K. Typically you'd expect soft sugar sand in the woods outside Tallahassee, but rain may have changed that. The Apalachicola National Forest rangers may have taken a backhoe and dug vehicle barriers on the course. Silver Lake Recreation Area, lately the race site, may be open, or it may be closed due to federal budget woes. There may be a rattlesnake in the recreation area, or there may be a black bear. And it's always possible that the race director has changed the course, as Jeff Nielsen had done again this year.


None of this seemed to worry Jay Wallace on Saturday, 25 September 2010, as he ran 18:53 to win the 35th annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K. Wallace finished a bit over 200 meters ahead of the runner up, Chris Coutts who covered the five kilometers of trails in 19:44. David Victor outkicked his fellow Wakulla High student, Stanley Linton, for third place, both clocking an identical 19:53. The defending Prefontaine 5K champion, Joel Piotrowski, finished 40th in 23:46.


A week earlier, Wallace had finished runner-up at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival. The same day, Kelly Stevens had finished runner-up in the women's division at the Women's Distance Festival. Just as Wallace moved up to the champion spot at the Prefontaine 5K, Stevens raced to the champion's place in the women'd division at Prefontaine, placing 22nd overall in 22:17. Stevens finished nearly 300 meters ahead of the second-place woman, Micah Adriani, who ran 23:36 for 36th place overall. Olivia Swedberg (42nd, 23:59) was the third woman in, and Nancy Stedman (54th, 25:06) crossed the line as the fourth woman and first woman master.


As to what to expect at the 36th annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K, it could be anything--a tropical storm, higher admission fees at Silver Lake, or an entirely new venue. But expect it to happen in autumn of 2011.

Lake, Woytalewicz run into Palace Saloon 5K history

On a perfect Tallahassee morning for distance running, Chris Lake ran away from a field of 1200 runners to win the 36th annual Palace Saloon 5K on Saturday, 10 April 2010. Lake made the dash from James Messer Fields Park to the Palace Saloon in 15:45, 21 seconds ahead of runner-up Daniel Lee. Jay Wallace set the pace for the master men, winning the 40-and-over division in 16:45 and finishing seventh overall, while Tim Unger was top among grandmaster men, placing 16th overall in 17:56.

The women's division turned out to be a duel between Christina Woytalewicz and Amy Hines. Hines had lost a similarly close Palace Saloon 5K to Lisa Johnson the previous year, 18:11 to 18:15. Racing Woytalewicz, Hines improved on her 2009 performance, running 17:45. Woytalewicz, however, clocked 17:42 for the win. The previous evening, just over twelve hours earlier, Woytalewicz had run a 10:29.20 3,000m at the Seminole Invitational track meet. Among the women masters, Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson successfully defended her title, running 19:49. Fran McLean was the top grandmaster woman, running 21:37.

In the eighth year of team competition, WYSIWYG won the men's division with a cumulative time of 85:53, beating the 2008 record of 86:02 set by "The Fighting Shamandas." Led by Amy Hines, the "Swift Chicks" won the women's division in 96:17, beating the 98:53 total of the runner-up "Death Eaters." The "Swift Chicks" total set a new record, breaking the previous best of 97:40 set by "The Girls Club" in 2007.

Springtime and everything is coming up Rosen and Lake

33 minutes and nine seconds after the starting siren sounded at the Leon County Courthouse around 8:15am on 27 March 2010, Chris Lake crossed the finish line on Suwanee Street as Tallahassee's Springtime 10K champion. A little over five minutes later Sheryl Rosen had the women's title, finishing 17th overall in 38:23. The men's competition and the women's competition unfolded quite differently, however.


For the men, Chris Lake took the lead early. By two kilometers, where the course starts to climb out of the Franklin Boulevard flood plain, it was already starting to look like the rest of the field was going to have to settle for second or hope that Lake tripped and fell. Vince Molosky led the pursuit as the runners followed Lake up Lafayette Street and into the hills of Myers Park. Halfway through the ten kilometer race, Lake was only farther ahead. Molosky, however, had lost the second position to Nate Kaiser, and the third spot to Stephen Cox. Daniel Lee was not far behind in fifth. At eight kilometers it was still Lake, Kaiser, Cox, Molosky, and Lee. Those positions held almost to the end. Lake crossed the line first, 130 meters ahead of Kaiser's 33:35. Cox held on for third in 33:44. Lee, however, made up a ten-second deficit in the last 400 meters to nip Molosky for fourth, 34:03 to 34:04. In the master men's competition Jay Wallace got away from Tony Guillen in the Myers Park hills to prevail 35:09 (7th overall) to 36:16 (8th overall).

Where the men's leader at two kilometers had been virtually alone, the women's leader at that spot had plenty of company. 2009 Springtime 10K champion Lisa Johnson, Sheryl Rosen, Shannon Coates, and Kristen Hagen were running in a group so close together that it would have been a difficult choice to pick a single one of them as the leader. Early in the sixth kilometer as the runners passed Myers Park for the second time, Kristen Hagen had a slight lead over Shannon Coates and Sheryl Rosen with Lisa Johnson just a few more steps back. But for Rosen, the longer the race the stronger the run. Over the last four kilometers she moved ahead and built a 50-meter lead, prevailing 38:23 to 38:35 over Coates, who finished 20th overall. Hagen was the third woman in at 38:39 (21st overall) and Johnson was fourth at 38:52 (23rd overall). Among the women masters, Tallahassee's Jane Johnson prevailed over Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson, 42:25 to 42:41.


686 athletes completed the associated Publix 5K, which was won by Etienne Mazimpaka in 19:14. The top woman in the 5K was Katherine Lindsay, who finished 20th overall in 21:58. The one-mile run for children was won by thirteen-year old J. P. Piotrowski in 6:08; the fastest girl in that race was nine-year old Katherine Resavage, fifth overall at 6:54.


Ordering better weather for running would have been difficult. The morning dawned cool and clear with minimal wind. This was in contrast to an uncharacteristically cool and wet winter which kept the plants from blooming early, so that the azaleas, dogwoods, and other blossoms were out along the course for the runners to view. In spite of the fine conditions, no runner in the field succeeded in collecting either the $500 bounty for a winning men's time under 30:00, or the $500 bounty for a winning women's time under 35:00. Maybe next year. Nevertheless, many runners did come out to take advantage of the weather. All together, there were 1,672 finishers in the three races--perhaps not the largest Springtime event in history, but certainly the largest in many, many years.

Wallace and Busby Scurry to Wins

Jay Wallace broke away from Tony Guillen at the halfway point of the Shamrock Scurry 5K, going on to win in 17:25, while Guillen finished runner-up at 17:54. Master runners ruled the day--Wallace and Guillen were both masters, and in fact all but one of the top seven runners fell into that 40-and-over category. Youth still held the advantage in the women's competition though, as Anna Busby edged out Thomasville master Mary Anne Grayson for the win, 21:03 to 21:09. Nearly 500 runners completed the 13 March 2010 run through the streets of Tallahassee's Killearn Estates.

Starting slightly later than the scheduled 8:30am race time, the runners headed north from Killearn United Methodist Church, down Shamrock Street. "Down" is actually quite descriptive, as the runners descended a hundred feet before turning off of Shamrock onto Edenderry Drive. That turn was not quite halfway through the race, and from there the runners had to climb back up to the church. Guillen and Wallace reached the turn running side by side, well ahead of the rest of the field. Then the uphills started and Wallace began to pull away. By three kilometers Wallace had a lead on Guillen, a lead he continued to increase, crossing the line over 130 meters ahead of Guillen. The rest of the field was another half a kilometer behind, led by Steve Barraco in third at 19:54. Former Leon High School (c/o 2008) distance runner Anna Busby didn't enjoy quite as large a margin in the women's race, but still finished about 20 meters ahead of Mary Anne Grayson.

The 2010 race marked the return of the Shamrock Scurry to the Tallahassee racing schedule after a two-year hiatus. In fact, this is at least the second time that the race has returned from the dead. This time, though, the Scurry returned to its original starting location near Killearn United Methodist Church, and a version of its original course. KUMC hosted the race and did an excellent job of getting the word out, as evidenced by the 700 runners who showed up to finish either the five-kilometer race or the one-mile fun run. Volunteers were at each intersection on the course, their safety efforts supplemented by traffic barricades. And there was a pancake breakfast afterwards. I suppose that you could complain about the weather, but you'd have to find someone else who doesn't care for cool air and clear skies to listen to you.

Wallace, Rosen winners at the 2009 Pine Run

I was standing next to Jay Silvanima on the back lawn of the Beadel House at the Tall Timbers Research Station, enjoying a magnificent view of Lake Iamonia while waiting for the runners to return. It was the morning of Saturday, 3 October 2009 and the second annual Pine Run at Tall Timbers 20K. Gordon Cherr, the race director, strolled over.


"Jay Wallace is going to win this thing," he announced.


"Vince Molosky was leading when I last saw the runners," I offered. I failed to mention that when I last saw the runners, they had only covered the first 200 meters of twenty kilometers.


The lead cyclist emerged from the woods, and we spotted the first runners, Jay Wallace. He shouted something at us as he went by, and then turned back into the woods to make another descent toward Lake Iamonia.


"What did he say?" I asked.


"Something about 'off course,'" said Jay.


"No one could go off course in this race," proclaimed Gordon. "I have it too well marked."


I glanced over toward the Beadel House and saw a lone runner wandering near the registration area. "Isn't that Vince Molosky?"


"Yeah, I think that's Vince," said Jay. "He's off course."


"How could anyone get lost on this course?" howled Gordon, dashing off to intercept the stray runner. "How could anyone get lost on this course?"


'Wrong Way' Molosky wasn't the only one to go astray Saturday morning, but most of the field managed to make their way to the finish line, including Jay Wallace, who held his lead to claim the win in 75:22. John Robida finished as runner up at 77:14, ahead of Tony Guillen in the third spot at 79:02. Wallace was also the morning's fastest master, and Guillen the second fastest. The top woman was Sheryl Rosen who turned in a 86:21. Behind Rosen, Olivia Swedberg and Kelsey Scheitlin battled for second, with Swedberg coming out on top, 91:14 to 91:25. Nancy Stedman was the top woman master, running the 20K in 1:43:54.


The Pine Run 20K was held on the International Paper Company's Southland Experimental Forest annually from 1977 to 2006, after which International Paper announced that it was selling the property. Gulf Winds Track Club and Tall Timbers Research Station revived the event in 2008 on Tall Timbers' property north of Lake Iamonia; this was the second running of the revived race.
