Udland goes 15:29 and Poulos 17:54 for Palace Saloon 5K wins

Tyler Udland"Who was that guy?" asked Chris Lake.

"That guy" was Tyler Udland, who had just beaten Lake and more than 1300 other runners to the finish line of Gulf Winds Track Club's 41st annual Palace Saloon 5K on Saturday morning, 11 April 2015. Udland, a graduate student in finance at Florida State University, covered the 3.1 miles from Messer Park to the Palace Saloon in 15:29. Lake, a three-time champion at the race, finished third in 16:22 behind Udland and Stephen Robbins. Robbins, a senior at Saratoga Springs Westlake High in Utah, ran 16:19.

It was calm and overcast when the race started at 8:00 AM near Messer Park, heading west on Jackson Bluff Road. The runners turned south onto Appleyard Drive, then east toward the one-mile mark on Municipal Way. Tyler Udland was leading when he reached the mile mark in 5:03.

Tyler Udland"I was just trying to run even splits," said Udland. "I kind of wanted to stay with the leaders. I've only been able to train the last three weeks, I had been injured before that."

Chris Lake was still just a few steps behind Udland at the mile, with Stephen Robbins, Nate Kaiser, and master runner Geb Kiros another four seconds back. On the second mile, though, Udland began to open a gap.

"He just really took off about a mile and a half," recalled Lake.

Now headed east on Jackson Bluff Road, Udland passed the two-mile mark in about 10:08, a little behind pace for his goal of 15:30, but well ahead of Lake and the rest of the field. Lake was still holding second place, but Robbins and Kaiser were starting to close in. Half a mile later Udland crested Michelob Ridge first, his lead longer than ever with the finish line in view at the bottom of a half mile of downhill running. Kaiser, Lake, and Robbins reached the top of the ridge in a group, setting up a fight for second place on the long, downhill finish.

Stephen RobbinsUdland had been eight seconds slower than 15:30 pace at the two-mile mark, but he more than made up that deficit during the charge down the slope of Michelob Ridge toward Budweiser Creek and the Palace Saloon. The other runners were still on the far side of the creek when Udland crossed the finish line with the win. In the last 20 years only Nick Sunseri had run faster at the Palace; Sunseri won the 2008 race in 15:25. Robbins fought past Lake and Kaiser to take second in 16:19, while Lake held off Kaiser 16:22 to 16:24 for third. Maclay School's Clay Milford, the reigning middle school state cross-country champion, edged Roger Schmidt for fifth, 16:51 to 16:52. Bryan Koon was the top master runner in the race, placing seventh overall in 16:59.

The 2015 Palace Saloon 5K was Tyler Udland's first appearance on the Tallahassee roads. Until the autumn of 2014 Udland had been in New Jersey, competing for Milburn High and Princeton University. After earning an undergraduate degree at Princeton, he was looking for a place to do graduate studies in finance. Udland decided on Florida State.

Katie Gorman
"I had a season of cross-country eligibility left, so I ran for the Seminoles in the fall," said Udland. "Now I'm just helping with the team, driving the van and stuff."

Apparently "stuff" includes winning the oldest 5000-meter road race in Tallahassee while wearing Seminole colors.

"Training is amazing here," said Udland. "I'm not surprised at the number of trails here, but I was surprised at how good all the trails are."

Shery Rosen and Lauren PoulosThe women's leaders, Sheryl Rosen and Lauren Poulos, were side by side as they raced on Municipal Way past the mile mark. Rosen had won the women's title at the 2013 Palace Saloon 5K. Poulos (nee Kolakowski), a former distance runner at Florida State University, had run the race in 2009 and 2011, but had never finished better than third in the women's standings. During the second half of the 2015 Palace, though, Poulos ran away from Rosen, building up a lead of more than 100 meters. Poulos finished the race in 17:54, winning the women's crown and placing 19th overall. Rosen was the women's runner-up in 18:24, coming in 26th overall. FSU graduate student Katie Gorman was the third woman finisher, 30th overall in 18:35. Katie Sherron, a Florida State economics professor, was fourth in the women's standings, 33rd overall in 18:40. Adriana Piekarewicz placed fifth among the women, coming in 43rd overall in 19:20. The top woman master and sixth female finisher was Tallahassee triathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant, 57th overall in 19:57.

1314 athletes finished the 41st annual Palace Saloon 5K, the third year in a row that more than 1300 covered the 3.1-mile route. Not coincidentally, it's the third year in a row that Mike Burns has directed the race for the Gulf Winds Track Club. Look for the 42nd Palace Saloon 5,000-meter road race on 16 April 2016.

Lake and Hines rule at the 40th annual Palace

Chris LakeThe Palace Saloon 5K road race turned 40 last Saturday, 12 April 2014.

None of us make it through four decades without changing, and the same is true of sports events. Since 1975, the Palace hasn't missed an annual running, although not all of those races were at the same time of year. The race has started and finished at Natural Bridge, started and finished at Messer Field, and one year it even started at TCC and finished at the Palace Saloon. Most years, though, the race has started at Messer Field and finished at the Palace Saloon, even if not always by the same route. A menagerie of different people have directed the race over the years. Race conditions have varied from warm to cool, from wet to dry.

Chris LakeA variety of athletes have won the race over the years. There haven't been 40 different winners, because some of the champions have been both fast enough and greedy enough to win multiple times. This year, for instance, Chris Lake scored his third Palace title in five years, winning the race in 15:52. On the women's side there was a new champion when Amy Hines won her first Palace title, placing 15th overall in 17:45. 1304 athletes finished this year's 3.1-mile trek from Messer Field to the Palace.

There were no extremes of weather for the history books on Saturday morning; when the race started at 8:00 AM conditions were clear, calm, and close to perfect. Chris Lake wasn't the only one on the starting line with ambitions of winning the landmark 40th Palace Saloon 5K. Lake may have led the field through the first mile in 5:07, but five other runners were right with him--Zach DeVeau, Vince Molosky, Stephen Cox, Marc Akbar, and Adam Greenstein. Lake decided it was time to thin out the lead pack.

Zach DeVeau"I put in a little 'mini burst' at the mile," he recalled later.

It worked. Runners began to drop out of the front group. When Lake passed the two-mile mark in 10:13, Zach DeVeau was still just a few strides back, but everyone else was far behind. Early in the third mile, the runners started up the one major grade on the course. Lake increased his lead on DeVeau during the climb. With half a mile to go, the runners crested Michelob Ridge and could see the finish line in the distance at the bottom of a long downhill.

Stephen Cox
"I tried to go on the downhill," said DeVeau. "I just didn't have the legs."

Lake had no such problem, racing down Michelob Ridge, across the Budweiser Creek bridge, and reaching the finish line in front of the Palace Saloon with a 15:52 win. DeVeau was second in 16:12. Stephen Cox grabbed third with a 16:26, and Nate Kaiser took fourth in 16:38. Bryan Koon was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing fifth overall in 16:46.

Amy HinesSoon after the start, Amy Hines went to the front of the women's field and stayed there. Her 17:45 was not only good enough to win the Palace Saloon 5K women's title, it was also the fastest 5K run by a woman on the roads of Tallahassee so far this year. Katie Sherron edged Lisa Johnson for the second women's spot, placing 29th overall in 18:42. Johnson was 30th overall in 18:47. Thomasville, Georgia, athlete Mary Anne Grayson was the first woman master, coming in 77th overall in 20:37 and placing tenth in the women's standings. It was Grayson's sixth year in a row as the top woman master at the Palace Saloon 5K.

The 40th Palace Saloon 5K won't go down in history for being freezing, sweltering, or wet. There were no memorable breakdowns in race management that sent runners off course or lost their results. This race will just have to be remembered for good times, both of the athletic and the bon temps variety.

Myers, Zeiler win the Battle of Jackson Bluff at Palace Saloon 5K

Some 1200 runners came to the 2012 Palace Saloon 5K last Saturday morning, April 14. They all came to run 3.1 miles. Some came dressed as Elvis, or Evel Knievel, or beer mugs. Some came for the beer. More than a few came to race. For that group, the fight for the title went all the way to the finish line in front of the Palace Saloon, where Josh Myers of Jacksonville Beach narrowly prevailed over Stephen Cox, 16:07 to 16:09. Lindsay Zeiler successfully defended her title in the women's division, running a winning 17:20 just two weeks after her victory in the Springtime 10K.

This was the 38th annual Palace Saloon 5K. Like all but two of those years, the race started on Dupree Street, heading north. During the first mile the runners negotiated Municipal Way and Appleyard Drive, then turned east onto Jackson Bluff Road for the long, two-mile straightaway to the finish line. There were eight runners in the lead group when the race reached Jackson Bluff, paced by Vince Molosky. David Thomas, Stephen Cox, Josh Myers, Peter Wood, Charlie Johnson, Josh Cross, and Christian Minor followed closely. At two miles the runners began to climb the one hill on the course. Cox made his move on the uphill, stretching out the leaders. Cross dropped out of contention, then Molosky. When the spectators at the Palace saw the first runners cresting the hill, Cox was ahead.

But there was still a half mile downhill run to the finish line. As the runners headed down the slope, Josh Myers passed Charlie Johnson, moving from third to second. Then Myers set his sights on Cox. At the three-mile mark Myers took the lead and held it, thundering across the finish line with a 16:07 victory. Cox placed second in 16:09 followed by Johnson and Wood, each in 16:15. At 16:16, former FSU cross-country runner Christian Minor was breathing down their necks in fifth place. Maclay School track coach Gary Droze took top master runner honors, finishing 10th overall in 17:16.

In the women's competition Lindsay Zeiler had a few steps on Amy Hines when the race turned onto Jackson Bluff Road. Over the last two miles Zeiler stretched that out into many steps, finishing the race 60 yards ahead of Hines, 17:20 to 17:41. Lisa Johnson, the 2008 and 2009 women's champion of the race, placed third in 18:16. Thomasville, Georgia runner Mary Anne Grayson was the first woman master in the race, 56th overall in 20:08.

Lake grabs his second Palace win, Zeiler her first

Chris Lake powered up the Jackson Bluff Road hill, shedding his pursuers and going on to win his second straight title at Tallahassee's 37th annual Palace Saloon 5K on Saturday morning, 16 April 2011. Lake covered the course in 15:48, becoming the first to win back-to-back men's titles in the race since Gary Droze in 1996 and 1997. While Lake was racing to victory, former Southeast Missouri Redhawk distance runner Lindsay Zeiler was putting together a strong last mile to win the Palace Saloon 5K women's championship in 18:24.

The race started from Tallahassee Community College, marking the first time since 1975 that the Palace Saloon 5K didn't start from Messer Park. Early in the morning it looked like the race might not start at all, as powerful electrical storms accompanied by a tornado watch swept through Tallahassee. But the rain had stopped by 7:00 am, and much of the cloud cover had drifted away by 7:30. When the starting siren sounded after 8:00, the storms were just a bad memory.

Lake led early, closely followed up Appleyard Drive by Marc Akbar, Tripp Southerland, and Ryan Sloan. Sloan had fallen off the pace by the end of the third kilometer, but Akbar and Southerland were still in striking range of Lake. But the end of the fourth kilometer is marked by a long climb on Jackson Bluff Road, and Lake was too strong on the uphill for Akbar and Southerland. From the crest of the hill you can see the Palace Saloon and the finish line, and Lake cruised downhill to victory in 15:48. Akbar beat out Southerland for the runner-up spot, 15:57 to 16:03, while Nate Kaiser (16:18) overtook Ryan Sloan (16:22) for fourth.

Lauren Poulos set the early pace for the women, but two-time Palace champ Lisa Johnson was never far behind--and neither was Lindsay Zeiler. Johnson soon took over the lead, and then Zeiler passed Poulos during the third kilometer to move into second. As with the men's race, Jackson Bluff Road and its hill was where the women's race turned. Zeiler went by Johnson and built up a commanding lead, arriving at the Palace Saloon at 18:24 to take the women's title. Johnson stumbled across the line runner-up in 18:43. Poulos was third, holding off Sheryl Rosen 19:01 to 19:05.

Michael Martinez (17th, 17:51) defeated Tony Guillen (23rd, 18:04) to take the master runner title. The fastest woman master of the morning was Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson (62nd, 20:17); it was Grayson's third straight master win at the Palace Saloon 5K. After Grayson the next woman master runner was Julie Clark (93rd, 21:38). Grayson and Clark were respectively the ninth and eleventh women to finish the race.

Many of the entries didn't show up Saturday morning, perhaps because of the weather. Still, 1064 runners finished the 2011 Palace Saloon 5K, the third straight year that over 1000 completed the race. Only in 2010 did more runners cross the finish line at the Palace. It was also the largest race in Tallahassee so far in 2011, exceeding both the Springtime 10K (934) and the Springtime 5K (731).

Awards for the 2011 Palace Saloon 5K

In yet another incident that causes people to trot out the tired cliché, "better late than never," the awards for the 37th annual Palace Saloon 5K have arrived. The 2011 edition of the traditional "Palace Pints" features the design from this year's Palace Saloon 5K T-shirt.

Awards go to everyone who finished in the top five in their age group and the five scoring members of the top two teams in each division (i.e., top two men's teams and top two women's teams). To make things a bit easier, I've included a list of award winners near the bottom of this post. If you won an award, you can pick it up right now at Capital City Runners, 1866 Thomasville Road, Tallahassee, Florida 32303. Drop by soon; they won't be there forever. If you aren't local or there is some other good reason that you can't make it by Capital City Runners, please contact me (Herb Wills) at hwills@gmail.com and I'll arrange to get your award to you.
