FAMU cross-country opens 2010 campaign at Troy

The Wayne Angel coaching era truly started for Florida A & M men's cross country last Saturday, 4 September 2010, as the Rattlers tested themselves in collegiate competition at the third annual Troy University Cross-Country Invitational at the Trojan Oaks Golf Course in Troy, Alabama. When the 5K race had been run, the Rattler men stood fourth in a field of eight teams, FAMU's Schuaib Winters leading the team with his 16:05 second-place finish. Lamere Buchanan also cracked the top ten for the Rattlers, running 17:03 for eighth.


The Auburn men won the meet, scoring 35 points and putting four athletes in the top ten, even though the Tigers didn't run two of their aces, Ben Cheruiyot and Colin Barker. The runner-up spot went to the host school, Troy University, with Trojan sophomore Enock Kirui winning the race in 15:58. Alabama State snuck ahead of Florida A & M to take third, narrowly outscoring the Rattlers 89 to 93. Morehouse (5th, 111), Huntingdon (6th, 161), Albany State (7th, 162), and LaGrange (8th, 227) made up the rest of the men's field.


In the women's race the championship went to the hosts, as the ladies from Troy put all five of their scorers in top ten to total a winning 37 points. Auburn's Stephanie Barnes and Elizabeth Briasco took the top two places in the 3200m race, running 11:29 and 12:08, but the Tigers still fell five points short of Troy and had to settle for second. Alabama State scored 58 points for third. Under second-year coach Darlene Moore, the Florida A & M women were fourth with 84 points. Led by Chandelic Jackson's 11th-place 12:58, all five of the Rattler scorers finished in the top half of the field. Behind the Rattlers were Huntingdon (5th, 145), Albany State (6th, 146), Alabama A & M (7th, 155), and LaGrange (8th, 250).


The championship distances for college cross country are 10K for the men and 6K for the women, but this was an early season meet and the distances were shorter--perhaps a little too short. It's true that even at the conference championship level races are 8K for the men and 5K for the women. But 5K is only half the men's championship distance, and 3200m isn't even as far as the 5K that the women were racing as high school girls.


Both the Florida A & M men and the Florida A & M women compete next at the Bethune-Cookman University Invitational in Daytona Beach, Florida on Wednesday, 8 September 2010. The only home meet for the Rattlers is the Bobby Lang Invitational on the Florida A & M campus on Saturday, 2 October 2010. However, the FAMU cross-country teams will also be running in Tallahassee the following week on Friday, 8 October 2010, in the Florida State University Invitational at the Apalachee Regional Park Trail.
