A winning day at the beach for Lady Rattlers cross country

Florida A & M University's Lady Rattler cross-country squad scored a near-perfect 18 points to win the Bethune-Cookman University Wildcat Invitational on Wednesday, 8 September 2010. FAMU freshman Chandelic Jackson ran 17:53 to win the 5K race on Daytona Beach, finishing just a hair ahead of FAMU's Shanay Mayes in the runner-up spot at 17:54. The Rattlers put all five of their scorers in the top seven. The Savannah State University women were second in the meet with 44 points, while the hosting Bethune Cookman Wildcats were third in the three-team field with 66 points.

Kevin Rono of Bethune Cookman won the men's 5K race in 15:08, but after that it was all Savannah State as the Tigers took the next five places, totaling a winning 20 points. BCU was second with 48 points and FAMU was third with 69.

The meet was run along the Atlantic Ocean on the sands that the Daytona Beach Chamber of Commerce likes to call "The World's most Famous Beach." "World's Fastest Beach" might also apply. Anyone who has ever run on the beach at Daytona (in the Easter Beach Run, for instance) knows that below the high tide mark the sands are flat, smooth, and hard-packed from automobile traffic. It would be hard to engineer a better running surface. It seems a little pretentious to call a three-way meet an Invitational, but this was the first year for the event and the end of the first year on the job for BCU head track and cross-country coach, Donald Cooper. Big things may be ahead.
