The athletes of Apalachee at the 2015 Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon is a totally different race than when I was last ran the event on Patriots Day in 1990. It was thousands of runners then instead of tens of thousands, and everyone started at noon. Now in order to accommodate the multitudes there is more than one starting wave, and athletes get assigned to corrals within their wave. The marathon is starting all morning, and finishing all afternoon. This isn't progress if you're back in your hometown trying to watch. In the 1990s, we'd just sneak down to a sports bar that (legally or illegally) had access to the satellite feed for the marathon and take a long lunch. That's not manageable in 2015; you'd have to take a whole sick day to watch the race at your favorite watering hole. Fortunately, technology has advanced to the point that you can watch the marathon via internet streaming video on your office computer. Sure, your productivity is shot for the day, but do you think those guys in accounting got anything done during the NCAA basketball tournament? Boston is only one day.


Some things have stayed the same, though. The race is still on Patriots Day, even if it now takes up all of Patriots Day. And a good number of athletes from the Tallahassee region still head up to Massachusetts for the Boston Marathon each April. Quite a few of them run well. For Tallahassee and the surrounding region (i.e., within a 100-mile radius of the State Capitol), Stephen Cox was the fastest finisher in the 119th Boston Marathon on 20 April 2015, finishing 225th overall in 2:38:49. Michael Peymann was the first master runner from the region, placing 1,462nd in 2:54:23. Allison Eagen was the first woman finisher from the Tallahassee country, coming in 5,185th in 3:12:39. Krista Killius was the region's best woman master at Boston; she was 13,080th in 3:39:05.

For Boston Marathon finishers who live outside that circle, congratulations on your performance, and I'm sorry that the part of the country you live in isn't as nice as ours.
