Tallahassee's top 5K road times in 2015 (through April 11)

Early in the year, you expect big changes on the annual lists of Tallahassee's top 5K road times. It takes a few races before all the faster runners have had their chance to get in a 5K on the roads. The early events aren't necessarily held on fast courses. The fast athletes don't necessarily run in the early events. It takes a few months for the lists to be mature.

By April, though, you'd expect that maturity to have arrived. At the end of March 2015 there had already been ten 5K road races on USATF certified courses in Tallahassee. For sure, there would still be changes. After a race, someone might move up the list a few spots. A new athlete might break into the top 25. A runner might get bumped out of the top 25. You might even get a new top performer. But a single event wouldn't practically rewrite the lists, right? Not in April.

Except Gulf Winds Track Club's 41st annual Palace Saloon 5K was on 11 April 2015, and you'd barely recognize the lists after that race. The men's list and the women's list each have a new top performer. There are 18 new top 25 performances on the men's list, and nine on the women's list. If you've followed local running history, though, it's what you'd expect from Tallahassee's first and fastest 5,000-meter road race.

Palace Saloon 5K champion Tyler Udland is the new name at the top of the men's list with a 15:29. Udland got his early distance running experience in New Jersey, competing for Milburn High and a liberal arts school called Princeton. After Princeton, Udland headed south to Tallahassee for graduate studies in finance at Florida State University. He had a year of NCAA cross-country eligibility left, so he ran for the Seminoles during the fall of 2014. By spring of 2015 he was ready to try the Palace. More than ready--Udland's 15:29 is the second-fastest winning time on the course in the last 20 years.

Stephen Robbins, the runner-up at the Palace, debuts on the 2015 list at number five with a 16:191. Currently racing for Westlake High in Saratoga Springs, Utah, until a few years ago Robbins lived in nearby Cairo, Georgia. This was his fourth Palace and his fastest yet. Nate Kaiser held on to the number six spot on the men's list by running 16:24 for fourth at the Palace. Maclay School's Clay Milford was already a top-ten performer and remained one by placing fifth in 16:51 at the Palace, earning him the number eight spot on the men's list. Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners broke into the top ten at number nine with his sixth-place 16:52 performance at the Palace. Bryan Koon was the top master performer in 2014 on the strength of the 16:46 he ran at the Palace that year. Koon appears on the men's list for the first time in 2015; the 16:59 he ran at Palace puts him number eleven, the fastest master for the year so far.

Heading the highlights of the changes on the women's list, Lauren Poulos is the new number one at 17:54, the first woman under 18:00 this year. Poulos went head-to-head at Palace with the previous leader, Sheryl Rosen. Rosen had been on the top of the women's list since 3 January 2015 and the TMH For Life 5K; she is still holds the second spot with the 18:04 she posted at the Run For The Cookies 5K. Former James Madison University distance runner Katie Gorman appears on the women's list for the first time, her 18:35 at the Palace putting her at number three. Katie Sherron moves up to number four on the women's list with her Palace time of 18:40. Although Stephanie Liles-Weyant raced at Palace, she didn't improve on her Trent Trot 5K time of 19:32. That time is still fast enough to put Liles-Weyant at number twelve as Tallahassee's fastest woman master so far in 2015. Also breaking into the top 25 of the women's rankings with their Palace performances were Marisa Abegg (20th, 20:14) and Alese Autore (23rd, 20:24).

One way of looking at the 2015 lists after Palace is that it's only April and the top times--15:29 by Tyler Udland and 17:54 by Lauren Poulos--have already nearly matched Tallahassee's top 5K road times of 2014--15:24 by Stanley Linton and 17:45 by Amy Hines. Another way of looking at it, though, is that by this time in 2014 the fastest times had already been run. If you're glass-half-full kind of person, though, you'll be happy to know that there are many 5K races on certified courses in Tallahassee left this year, starting with the FSU Autism 5K on 18 April 2015 and the Refuge House SAAM 5K on 19 April 2015. Other list-eligible races before the end of the year include the Nene Fest 5K on 9 May 2015, the inaugural T-PAL 5K on 30 May 2015, the Run Around The Lakes 5K on 13 June 2015, the Firecracker 5K on 4 July 2015, the Sickle Cell 5K on 12 September 2015, the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K on 19 September 2015, the Race For Readiness on 17 October 2015, and the Tallahassee Turkey Trot 5K on 26 November 2015. If no one cracks 15:00 on the Tallahassee roads in 2015, it won't be for lack of opportunity.
