Martinez and Barnes make fast tracks at the Fallen Heroes 5K

Finishing over 100 meters ahead of runner-up Gary Galvez, Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez won Operation One Voice's Fallen Heroes 5K on Saturday morning, 20 September 2014. Martinez's time was 18:21 for the 3.1-mile run through Maclay Gardens State Park, on the north side of Tallahassee, Florida. Capital City Runners' Galvez ran 18:45.


Brittney Barnes crossed the finish line next after Galvez. Barnes also ran the Fallen Heroes 5K in 2013, finishing sixth in the women's standing with a 23:45. In 2014 she trimmed more than three minutes from that mark, capturing the women's title with a 20:25, the fastest run ever by a woman in the Fallen Heroes 5K. Barnes needed that speed, though, because the second fastest woman in the history of the Fallen Heroes 5K wasn't far behind--Beth Miller ran 20:36 to finish fifth overall and runner-up to Barnes in the women's division. Mary Vancore was the third woman finisher and first woman master, coming in 12th overall in 22:23.


104 athletes finished the 2014 Fallen Heroes 5K.

The 2009 Fallen Heroes 5K was run on a slightly long course in Tom Brown Park. The 2010-2014 races were run in Maclay Gardens State Park. There was no Fallen Heroes 5K in 2012.
