Ryan Bausback wins while Katie Sherron burns a 17:42 at the Sickle Cell 5K

Five runners shared the lead of the Sickle Cell 5K as they raced past the four-kilometer mark on Saturday morning, 11 September 2021. But during the final kilometer on the streets of Tallahassee, Florida, Ryan Bausback left his challengers behind, winning the race in 17:22. Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 17:42.

The race started on Tanner Drive in front of Tallahassee's Jake Gaither Community Center precisely at 8:30 AM. Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete bolted out into the lead, shadowed by Ryan Bausback. Christian Minor trailed a few steps back, trailed by Dr. Katie Sherron and Dr. Ryan Truchelut. Two kilometers later, on Springsax Road, those five had gathered into a tight lead pack, well ahead of the rest of the field. Canete was still setting the pace as they headed east to join the Saint Marks Rail Trail.

Canete faded to the back of the group on the Rail Trail. Bausback moved to the front, with Sherron just off his shoulder while Truchelut and Christian followed.

Making a hairpin turn, the athletes left the Rail Trail to head west on Bragg Drive, back toward the Community Center and the finish line. Bausback started to put a gap on the field. Truchelut and Minor overtook Sherron, but their race was for second. Bausback was leaving them behind.

Bausback crossed the line first in 17:22. Truchelut ouckicked Minor for the runner-up spot, 17:33 to 17:34. Sherron followed in 17:42, the first woman in the race. At 17:58, Canete was fifth overall and the first master runner.

It was Bausback's first win at the Sickle Cell 5K as well as his first time running the race. For Sherron, it was her third Sickle Cell, her second time winning the race's women's division, and 17:42 was her fastest time yet at the event.

"That’s my second fastest 5K ever," noted Sherron.

Thirteen-year-old Clifton Lewis placed second in the women's standings, finishing eleventh overall in 19:56--Lewis' first sub-20:00 road 5K. Florida State University undergrad Jane Eiselstein took third in the women's standings with a 20:38, placing sixteenth overall. Eiselstein is an alum of the cross-country team at Girls Preparatory School, the 2020 Tennessee state champions in their division. Tallahassee schoolteacher Vicky Droze was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 24th overall in 22:19.

119 athletes finished the 2021 Sickle Cell 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed the race.
