Ryan Bausback and Megan Noonan soar above the competition at the Bluebird 5K

The Alford Greenway is just one of Tallahassee's many great places to run cross-country. Nearly 200 athletes showed up at Alford to enjoy some cross-country running on Labor Day morning, 6 September 2021, at the fifth annual Bluebird 5K Run For Brookie B. Ryan Bausback led the harriers, winning the race in 18:34. Megan Noonan was the first woman in the field, placing fifteenth overall in 22:18.

After a weekend featuring temperatures not nearly as high and air not nearly as wet as usual, the Tallahassee humidity was back on the morning of the race. The grass on the Greenway was so high and so wet that traversing the course felt more like wading than like running. But the conditions were as much part of cross-country as the hills, and the race got under way at 8:30 AM.

A group of six runners was setting the pace for the field at the 400-meter mark, including three high school runners--Brookwood frosh Kent Grayson, Community Christian senior Keelan Tidwell, and Community Christian sophomore Carson Freeland. Accompanying them were Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete, Ryan Bausback, and Hunter Potts.

The high school athletes fell back. With 1200 to go, Bausback was in front with Canete a few steps back and Potts trailing in third. Bausback opened a gap during the final kilometer, going on to win in 18:34. Canete was second in 18:50 and Potts third in 19:01. Behind them, Freeland took fourth in 19:09, Tidwell fourth in 19:48, and Grayson fifth in 19:58.

Megan Noonan was the first woman to reach the 400-meter mark at the Bluebird 5K. She held that position for the rest of the race, taking the women's title in 22:18. Behind Noonan, Community Christian junior Teresa Meli moved up a couple of spots during the race to finish second in the women's standings, placing nineteenth overall in 23:49. Juliana Krueger was the third woman and 22nd overall in 24:50. Lincoln High frosh Sophia Youngberg placed fourth in the women's division and 2th overall in 25:05. Ten-year-old Charlotte Sikes of the Red Hills Running Club was fifth on the women's side and 26th overall in 25:45.
