Charlie Johnson and Amanda Sava each collect a second Tails & Trails title

On the east side of Tallahassee, Florida, Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park, and the Alford Greenway are connected by dozens if not hundreds of miles of trails. Charlie Johnson covered 13.1 miles on those trails in 1:25:32 to win the half-marathon at the eighteenth annual Tails & Trails on Saturday morning, 4 May 2019. Amanda Sava was the first woman in the race, defending her 2018 title in the half marathon with a 1:38:43 and placing seventh overall.


The Animal Shelter Foundation has always hosted the event, starting in 2002 with a 5K race, adding a 10K in 2006 and the half marathon in 2015. Two days before the 2019 Tails & Trails, the longest run was in peril.

“I got a call from the city on Thursday at 4:30,” said Tom Perkins. “There was a hawk attacking people in Lafayette Heritage Park. We were going to have to cancel the race or re-route it.”


It turned out that a very minor change of course satisfied the hawk’s territorial instincts, and the half-marathon started from the Animal Sheter as scheduled at 7:45 AM, with Jeff Nielsen guiding the runners on the lead bicycle. After the first minute of running, Charlie Johnson was already well ahead of the field. No one, athlete or irate bird, challenged Johnson for the rest of the race.


“I was hoping for a hawk attack,” said Johnson. “Anything to have some excitement out there. It helped to have Jeff Nielsen out there on the bicycle, telling me, ‘Okay, there’s a big hill coming up.’”

There are numerous hills on the Tails & Trails half marathon course, which takes the runners in and out of the Lake Lafayette basin before finishing back at the Animal Shelter, atop the ridge that Easterwood Drive runs along. Amanda Sava also noticed those hills.


“It was tough!” said Sava. “I ran a lot faster this year. I think I’m in better shape, but I ran a triathlon last week and my legs are still recovering. I’m happy with my race, though. I’ll probably take a little break after this.”

Behind Johnson’s winning 1:25:32, Brad Busboom took second in 1:32:31 and Andrew Theodore third in 1:36:47. Jack McDermott was the first master runner in the half marathon, placing fourth overall in 1:36:47.


Melissa Thompson finished runner-up to Sava in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 1:52:26. Courtney Mason was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 1:53:19. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, twentieth overall in 1:55:11.

The Tails & Trails 10K started at 8:30, when the fastest half marathon runners were still exploring the Alford Greenway. Pensacola, Florida master runner Jennifer McGranahan was not only the first woman in the race, she was also the overall winner. McGranahan grabbed the lead right after the start, shadowed by Sean Landeta of Thomasville, Georgia. Landeta hung on for the first half of the race, but McGranahan got away after the leaders had turned around for the return trip to the Animal Shelter. 50 meters ahead by the six-kilometer mark, McGranahan finished with a lead of nearly 200 meters and a winning time of 46:08.

“That was fun!” said McGranahan. “I’ll be out there next year. I liked everything that went into this race; the trails, the family discount, the animals. It’s a nice way to find good homes for some animals.”


McGranahan has deep running roots in Pensacola, having raced cross-country and track for Pensacola High before going on to compete for the University of Florida. Currently, she’s working on a degree in physical therapy at Florida A&M University.

“I usually run the Fiesta of Five Flags 10K in Pensacola, and I could have driven back for that,” said McGranahan. “But I thought, ‘No!’ I love Tom Brown Park and the trails.”


Sean Landeta was the first man in the race, coming in second overall in 46:57. Paul Guyas was the first male master, third overall in 47:12. Master runner Tim Unger was third on the men's side and fifth overall in 48:40.

Tim Unger is Lilli Unger’s father, and Lilli Unger was second in the women’s standings.The Leon High cross-country runner placed fourth overall in 47:54. Alyssa Terry finished third in the women's division and seventh overall in 50:04.

The Tails & Trails 5K started at the same time as the 10K. Kurt Dietrich took the early lead in the 3.1-mile race. Having won the 5K in 2017 and 2018, Dietrich was going for a third straight title, but Connor Edwards denied him that. Edwards, an eighth-grader at Swift Creek Middle School, overtook Dietrich then went on to win the race in 19:44. Dietrich was second in 20:00, and Daniel Wurgler third in 20:14. Aaron Guyer was the top master runner in the 5K, placing seventh overall in 21:06.

In the 2015 Tails & Trails 10K Brittney Barnes had been the first woman. In the 2016 Tails & Trails 5K Barnes had been the first woman. In the 2019 5K she was again the first woman, placing ninth overall in 21:38. Amelia Bryant was second to Barnes, placing thirteenth overall in 25:10. Twelve-year-old Liliana Lewis edged Paula O'Neill for the third spot in the women's standings, 25:47 to 25:49. The two were sixteenth and seventeenth overall. O'Neill was the first woman master in the race.

643 athletes crossed the finish line at the 2019 Tails & Trails, with 125 completing the half marathon, 148 the 10K, 302 the 5K, and 68 the one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip-timed each of the four races.

Connor Edwards and Clifton Lewis finish first at the Bobcat 5K

On Saturday, 10 March 2019, Connor Edwards was near the end of his eighth grade year at Swift Creek Middle School in Tallahassee, Florida. That means that he had been down Pedrick Road nearly 500 times, headed for school. That Saturday morning, though, Edwards went a little farther on Pedrick, past Swift Creek to the Alford Greenway. There, Edwards won the third annual Bobcat 5K Cross-Country Race, narrowly defeating master runner Dr. Geb Kiros, 20:05 to 20:07. Ten-year-old Clifton Lewis was the first runner in the women's division across the finish line, sixth in 22:38.

Behind the duelling pair of Edwards and Kiros, master runner Duane Evans took third in 20:32. Evans had won the 2018 Bobcat 5K. Right behind Evans in fourth, Yien Liu, a seventh grader on the Fairview Middle School cross-country team, ran 20:37.


Darcy Brinkman was second in the women's standings, finishing eighth overall in 23:07. Angie Milford was the first woman master and third female finisher, tenth overall in 23:43.


150 athletes finished the 2019 Bobcat 5K, and another 114 completed a 1.2-mile (about 2K) fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee chip timed both races.

Jim Halley and Katie Sherron were crazy-fast at Miller Landing Madness

After trailing for four miles, Jim Halley came on in the fifth and final mile to grab the lead from Myles Gibson, then raced home to win Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Miller Landing Madness 8K in 33:07. Katie Sherron won the women's title, placing twelfth overall in 36:04.

The eight-kilometer race wasn’t the only event at the Madness that Saturday morning, Aug. 18. A five-kilometer race started at the same time, and a three-kilometer an hour later. All three were run at Tallahassee’s Phipps Park, just off of Miller Landing Road. The 8K and the 5K got started at 8:00 AM. Stephen Robbins led the 8K in the early going, but was eventually overtaken by Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson. Meanwhile, Halley of Tallahassee was stalking Gibson.


“Myles goes out fast” said Halley. So I just tried to gradually catch up to him, and I did with a mile to go. I didn’t know Myles was in the lead, though. I thought there might be a fast sixteen-year-old ahead of us.”

The confusion arose because the 8K had shared a course with the 5K for the first mile. But Gibson had been in front of the 8K field, and now Halley was. He still was when he crossed the finish line in a winning 33:07. At 33:19, Gibson was the top master runner and overall runner-up. Two Lincoln High cross-country runners--junior Joey Jung and sophomore Nicholas Samuel--challenged Gibson for second, but Jung took third in 33:19 and Samuel was fourth in 33:20. Another Lincoln athlete, junior Kevin Majano, took fifth in 33:47, just ahead of one-time race leader Stephen Robbins, sixth in 33:50.

Katie Sherron had taken the women’s title at the Miller Landing Madness 8K before, winning in 2013. Although Alyssa Terry was closing fast during the last mile, Sherron still led the women’s field from start to finish, collecting her second Madness title with a 36:04 effort. Terry was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 36:11. Brittney Barnes was the third woman and twentieth overall in 37:43. Ali Kelly was the top woman master and seventh female finisher, 45th overall in 41:53.

Meanwhile, the frontrunners in the 5K had already wrapped up their own race. Jesse Boyd had been the first by the four-kilometer mark of the shorter race.


“Back to back,” he chanted, breathlessly, as he went by. “Back to back.”

Boyd, a Blountstown High alumnus, was indeed the defending champion in the race and was going for a second win. He got it, running 18:00--just five seconds off his winning time from the year before. Brandon Flagler was second in the 3.1-mile race at 18:50. In a finish-line battle of two high school cross-country runners, Wakulla junior Daniel Wiedeman edged North Florida Christian junior David Keen for third, 19:18 to 19:19.

Sheryl Rosen had been the first woman in the Miller Landing Madness 8K in 2008, 2010, and 2011, but in 2018 she stepped down to the 5K. Rosen took the women’s title in the shorter race, placing tenth overall in 19:57. Wakulla High senior cross-country runner Alyssa Langston was runner-up in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 22:33. Kendall Ward was the third woman and 25th overall in 22:53.

After the 8K and 5K runners had cleared the trails of Phipps Park, it was time for the 3K runners to take their turn. The race turned into a duel between two middle school cross-country runners, Fairview seventh-grader Patrick Koon, the defending champions, and Swift Creek eighth-grader Connor Edwards. The two had met before on the trails during the 2017 cross-country season, but this was a new year and a new race.

“After the water I started catching up to Patrick,” said Edwards. “I caught him at the top of the hill. Near the end he started sprinting, so I started sprinting.”


Edwards proved to have the most leg speed left at the end of the race, and inched ahead of Koon for the win, 10:37 to 10:39. The marks were the two fastest times ever posted in the Miller Landing Madness 3K, both beating the event record of 10:48 run by James McClure in 2014. Khary Wright took third in 11:21.


There was another record on the female side, as Rory Claussen led the girls’ field from wire-to-wire. The seventh-grader ran 11:26, eclipsing the 11:34 run by Alyson Churchill in the 2015 Madness. A Panama City runner, Claussen took the Tallahassee hills in stride.

“It was fun,” said Claussen. “We don’t have a lot of hills in Panama City. I wanted to do some 3K races before the big fall races.”


One of the big fall races will be the Florida Middle School Cross-Country Championship, where Claussen finished second in 2017.


Behind Claussen, Maclay eighth-grader Ella Porcher was the second female and ninth overall in 11:55. Sofia Paredes, another Maclay eighth-grader, was third in the girls' standings and thirteenth overall in 12:05.
