Boyd and Ward lead a Tallahassee Community College sweep of the Cougar Cross-Country Challenge

Bridget Morse of Florida Gateway College went 22:46 to win the College Women's 5K at the Cougar Cross-Country Challenge on Friday evening, 24 August 2018, in Tallahassee, Florida's Phipps Park. But it was the Lady Eagles of Tallahassee Community College who took the team title, taking the next five places to put up a winning total of 20 points.

Before the women raced, though, the college men ran their own 5K at 5:00 PM. Tallahassee Community College was unopposed in the men's 5K. Jesse Boyd, a Blountstown High alum, won the race by 300 meters, running 17:53. Six days earlier, Boyd had won another 5K in Phipps Park, the Miller Landing Madness 5K, running 18:00. Brandon Flagler took second in 18:49, with Giovanni Duran a close third in 18:54. Gannon Hundley (4th, 19:46) and Simon Hodgson (5th, 19:52) also scored for the Eagles.

Florida Gateway College has a cross-country tradition going back to the twentieth century, when the school fielded teams as Lake City Junior College and Lake City Community College. The school dropped the sport, though, and dropped all sports in 2008. Florida Gateway established a women's cross-country team in 2018 as part of the Timberwolves' return to intercollegiate athletics. The Cougar Cross-Country Challenge was the first competition for the Timberwolves' restored program. Columbia High alum Bridget Morse was the star in Florida Gateway's debut, leading most of the race and winning by nearly 200 meters.


After Morse had crossed the finish line, though, it was TCC's turn to shine. Kendall Ward took second for the Eagles in 23:38, followed by Mia Wiederkehr in third at 23:50 and Rachel Williams in fourth at 24:28. Dorcas Jepleting (5th, 24:38) and Genevieve Printiss (6th, 25:02) were the next two Eagles, giving Tallahassee Community College a mathematically unbeatable score of 20 points. Florida Gateway was second with 35.

The next meet on Tallahassee Community College's 2018 cross-country schedule is the Valdosta State Border Clash in Valdosta's Freedom Park on Friday, 31 August 2018. The TCC women and the Florida Gateway women will next meet again a week later at the University of North Florida Invitational in Jacksonville, Florida on 7 September 2018.

Jim Halley and Katie Sherron were crazy-fast at Miller Landing Madness

After trailing for four miles, Jim Halley came on in the fifth and final mile to grab the lead from Myles Gibson, then raced home to win Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Miller Landing Madness 8K in 33:07. Katie Sherron won the women's title, placing twelfth overall in 36:04.

The eight-kilometer race wasn’t the only event at the Madness that Saturday morning, Aug. 18. A five-kilometer race started at the same time, and a three-kilometer an hour later. All three were run at Tallahassee’s Phipps Park, just off of Miller Landing Road. The 8K and the 5K got started at 8:00 AM. Stephen Robbins led the 8K in the early going, but was eventually overtaken by Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson. Meanwhile, Halley of Tallahassee was stalking Gibson.


“Myles goes out fast” said Halley. So I just tried to gradually catch up to him, and I did with a mile to go. I didn’t know Myles was in the lead, though. I thought there might be a fast sixteen-year-old ahead of us.”

The confusion arose because the 8K had shared a course with the 5K for the first mile. But Gibson had been in front of the 8K field, and now Halley was. He still was when he crossed the finish line in a winning 33:07. At 33:19, Gibson was the top master runner and overall runner-up. Two Lincoln High cross-country runners--junior Joey Jung and sophomore Nicholas Samuel--challenged Gibson for second, but Jung took third in 33:19 and Samuel was fourth in 33:20. Another Lincoln athlete, junior Kevin Majano, took fifth in 33:47, just ahead of one-time race leader Stephen Robbins, sixth in 33:50.

Katie Sherron had taken the women’s title at the Miller Landing Madness 8K before, winning in 2013. Although Alyssa Terry was closing fast during the last mile, Sherron still led the women’s field from start to finish, collecting her second Madness title with a 36:04 effort. Terry was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 36:11. Brittney Barnes was the third woman and twentieth overall in 37:43. Ali Kelly was the top woman master and seventh female finisher, 45th overall in 41:53.

Meanwhile, the frontrunners in the 5K had already wrapped up their own race. Jesse Boyd had been the first by the four-kilometer mark of the shorter race.


“Back to back,” he chanted, breathlessly, as he went by. “Back to back.”

Boyd, a Blountstown High alumnus, was indeed the defending champion in the race and was going for a second win. He got it, running 18:00--just five seconds off his winning time from the year before. Brandon Flagler was second in the 3.1-mile race at 18:50. In a finish-line battle of two high school cross-country runners, Wakulla junior Daniel Wiedeman edged North Florida Christian junior David Keen for third, 19:18 to 19:19.

Sheryl Rosen had been the first woman in the Miller Landing Madness 8K in 2008, 2010, and 2011, but in 2018 she stepped down to the 5K. Rosen took the women’s title in the shorter race, placing tenth overall in 19:57. Wakulla High senior cross-country runner Alyssa Langston was runner-up in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 22:33. Kendall Ward was the third woman and 25th overall in 22:53.

After the 8K and 5K runners had cleared the trails of Phipps Park, it was time for the 3K runners to take their turn. The race turned into a duel between two middle school cross-country runners, Fairview seventh-grader Patrick Koon, the defending champions, and Swift Creek eighth-grader Connor Edwards. The two had met before on the trails during the 2017 cross-country season, but this was a new year and a new race.

“After the water I started catching up to Patrick,” said Edwards. “I caught him at the top of the hill. Near the end he started sprinting, so I started sprinting.”


Edwards proved to have the most leg speed left at the end of the race, and inched ahead of Koon for the win, 10:37 to 10:39. The marks were the two fastest times ever posted in the Miller Landing Madness 3K, both beating the event record of 10:48 run by James McClure in 2014. Khary Wright took third in 11:21.


There was another record on the female side, as Rory Claussen led the girls’ field from wire-to-wire. The seventh-grader ran 11:26, eclipsing the 11:34 run by Alyson Churchill in the 2015 Madness. A Panama City runner, Claussen took the Tallahassee hills in stride.

“It was fun,” said Claussen. “We don’t have a lot of hills in Panama City. I wanted to do some 3K races before the big fall races.”


One of the big fall races will be the Florida Middle School Cross-Country Championship, where Claussen finished second in 2017.


Behind Claussen, Maclay eighth-grader Ella Porcher was the second female and ninth overall in 11:55. Sofia Paredes, another Maclay eighth-grader, was third in the girls' standings and thirteenth overall in 12:05.

Jesse Boyd wins the Jingle Bell Run, a postscript to his BHS cross-country career

Jesse Boyd is a senior at Blountstown High School. On 11 November 2017, his high school cross-country career came to a close at Florida's State Cross-Country Championships. Over a month later, though, Boyd was still racing. On Friday evening, 15 December 2017, Boyd won the ninth annual Jingle Bell Run 5K on the streets of Blountstown, Florida, finishing over 400 meters ahead of the next runner in 18:15. Saul Puente, a sophomore on the Blountstown High cross-country team, took second in 20:07. Greg Skinner was the top master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 22:33. Blountstown Middle School sixth-grader Leyah O'Kelley placed first in the women's standings, finishing thirteenth overall in 26:14.


51 athletes finished the 2017 Jingle Bell Run. The race was hosted by Blountstown Middle School.

Carlson and Sack take Miller Landing Madness

In Tallahassee, Florida nearly 600 athletes were at Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 19 August 2017, for three different cross-country races. It was Gulf Winds Track Club’s tenth annual Miller Landing Madness. Clayton Carlson won the 8K, the headline race, covering the not-quite-five-mile course in 29:11. Kat Sack took the women’s title for the second year in a row, placing fourteenth overall in 35:01.

“The guy who won the 8K was so far ahead of me I didn’t know he was in the race,” said Bryan Koon, who placed third in 31:05.


Some confusion was understandable. The 5K race was run concurrently with the 8K. Carlson had a big enough lead that he was out of sight by the time it would have become clear that he was running the 8K. As a six-year veteran of the Miller Landing Madness, Carlson has run each of the three races at one time or another. In 2012 and 2013, when he was a member of the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country team, Carlson raced the Miller Landing Madness 3K. From 2014 to 2016, his first three years running cross-country for Lincoln High, he raced the 5K. This year, though, his senior year at Lincoln, Carlson moved up to the 8K.


“Coach Sumner wanted me to do the 8K, something harder,” explained Carlson. However difficult the extra distance was, he enjoyed the run. “It’s got a lot of hills and the water pit kind of threw me off but it’s a nice course. We’ve got a race here next weekend at the Cougar Challenge.”

The Cougar Challenge on Aug. 26 is the cross-country season opener for Carlson, his Lincoln teammates, and many of the other high school runners in town. The “water pit,” an obstacle that the runners in the 5K and 8K had to splash through twice, won’t be part of the course that day.


Carlson wasn’t the only high school harrier in the 8K. Weston Schrock, a senior on the Blountstown High cross-country team, was second in 30:58. Elsewhere on the age spectrum, Bryan Koon was the top master runner in the race, third overall in 31:05.

In the women’s competition, three-time Miller Landing Madness champion Sheryl Rosen was close enough to see that Kat Sack was in the 8K, but not close enough to catch her. Rosen, the women’s record holder in the event, was second in the women’s standings and fifteenth overall in 35:20. Alyssa Terry was the third woman and 32nd overall in 39:35. Monica Judd was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 35th overall in 40:12.

While preps Carlson and Schrock were leading the 8K, most of the high school athletes at the Madness raced the 5K. Blountstown High senior Jesse Boyd won the race in 17:55. Gatlin Nennstiel, an alumnus of the Aucilla Christian Academy cross-country program, took second in 18:25, and North Florida Christian frosh David Keen edged Wakulla High junior Chris Porter for third, both runners clocked in 18:36. Randall Porcher was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing 25th overall in 20:48.

Elizabeth Skipper topped the women's standing in the 5K. Skipper, a third-year runner on the Life University cross-country team, was 29th overall in 21:07. Maclay School's Hannah Hosay was the second woman and 31st overall in 21:30. Chase Merrick, a Lincoln High sophomore, was the third woman and 32nd overall in 21:38.

Even younger runners made up most of the field in the 3K, with middle school athletes dominating. Patrick Koon, a sixth-grader on the Fairview Middle School cross country team, raced 11:01 for the win. Paige Churchill, a seventh-grader on the Swift Creek Middle School squad, was the first female finisher, placing eleventh overall in 12:43.

“About half a mile in I took the lead,” said Koon. “It’s fast, downhill, and I like the water. I really love this course.”


“I got a good start, but after that hill--well, I didn’t get enough to eat this morning. I don’t really do well in morning races,” said Churchill. “I liked the water! It was fun.”

Swift Creek seventh-grader Eric Stillman was second in 11:15 and Holy Comforter eighth-grader Leo Kelly took third in 11:18. Taking second on the girls’ side, Maclay School eighth-grader Madeline Lillie was seventeenth overall in 12:58. Holy Comforter eighth-grader Sophia Umana was the third girl and 30th overall in 13:37.
