Flashy victories for Sullivan and Rosen

Kevin SullivanOn a road-racing calendar full of 5K runs, a 12K such as Gulf Winds Track Club's Flash 12K stands out. Twelve kilometers is not an entirely obscure distance, though. The men's world cross-country championship is contested at 12K. San Francisco's Bay-to-Breakers, at 101 years old the fifth oldest road race in the United States, is a 12K. Bay-to-Breakers is a bit larger than the Flash 12K of course; one year the San Francisco race claimed over 100,000 participants. But Bay-to-Breakers also includes costume contests and divisions for "human centipedes," while the Flash 12K is all about running. Sure, you'll see a couple of guys dressed as Batman in the Flash. Nowadays, though, bat-suits are practically business casual.

Stanley Linton and Vince MoloskyIt wasn't San Francisco's tens of thousands, but over 300 athletes set out from San Marcos de Apalachee State Park in St. Marks, Florida on Saturday morning, 16 February 2013, for the 25th annual Flash 12K. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners reached the first turn of the 7.46-mile course ahead of the rest of the field, with Stanley Linton and Vince Molosky a few steps behind. After two miles Linton was able to shake Molosky, but Sullivan had continued to pull away while the fight for second played out. When it was all over, Sullivan had returned to Fort San Marcos and the finish line with a winning time of 38:41. It was the fastest Flash 12K since 1994, and the equivalent of doing two back-to-back 16:07 5K runs then continuing at the same pace for another mile and a quarter. Stanley Linton finished second in 40:26, and Vince Molosky held off Nate Kaiser for third, 41:42 to 41:59. Sean Hudson took the top master spot, running 44:36 for seventh.

Sheryl Rosen
While Kevin Sullivan was racing to his first Flash 12K, Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen was picking up her second women's title, leading the female field from start to finish en route to a 46:17 and placing 17th overall. Behind Rosen, Micah Adriani and Mary Anne Grayson dueled for the women's runner-up spot for the first two miles before Adriani pulled away, going on to finish 26th overall in 49:19. Grayson was the first woman master and third woman overall, running 50:45.

Gillard's previous experience at the 6K distance included the NCAA Division II cross-country championships in Joplin, Missouri last November, where she competed on the UWF team.
