United State Air Force Academy alumnus Brandon Hough and Academy cadet Thomas Heikkinen went one-two in the annual Summer Sprint 5K on Saturday morning, 16 July 2011, at Naval Support Activity Panama City. Hough posted a winning time of 18:05, twelve seconds ahead of his former Rutherford Ram teammate, Heikkinen. Enterprise, Alabama master runner Melissa Unrath was the first woman finisher, placing tenth overall in 22:22.Hough has also won road races this summer on St. George Island (the Summer Sizzler 5K on June 25) and in Bainbridge, Georgia (the Pure Water, Pure Love 5K on June 4). Hough and Heikkinen's duel at the Summer Sprint comes one week before the 2011 Critter Run 5K in Dothan, Alabama. Heikkinen finished a few steps ahead of Hough in the 2010 Critter Run, winning the race 17:14 to 17:17.
113 athletes finished the 2011 edition of the Summer Sprint 5K, significantly up from last year's 65 finishers. The Morale, Welfare, and Recreation office of Naval Support Activity Panama City sponsors the race.
