Grace Koeppel and Leo Rutledge lead a Maclay sweep of 1A District 4

For some athletes in North Florida, the high school cross-country state championship series opened in Lake City on Thursday, 29 October 2020 with the 1A District 4 Meet. Maclay swept the team titles in that opening round competition at Alligator Lake Park, the girls scoring a winning 19 points and the boys nabbing first in their race with 18 points. Maclay frosh Gracie Koeppel was first in the girls' 5K with a 20:50. In the boys' 5K, Maclay senior Leo Rutledge edged Maclay junior Jackson Yarbrough for the win, 17:24 to 17:25.

Morgan Wilson, a Community Christian junior, was second in 21:11. As it turned out, Wilson was the only barrier between Maclay and a perfect score, because the next four places were Maclay's remaining scorers--seventh-grader Lillian Koeppel was third in 22:24, frosh Natalie Hammett was fourth in 22:29, seventh-grader Nishi Bhanderi was fifth in 22:57, and eighth-grader Payton Thumm was sixth in 22:58. After that wave of blue-clad runners, Maclay had nineteen points and the 2020 1A District 4 girls' cross-country title.


Led by Wilson, Community Christian was second in the team standings with 50 points. Saint Joseph scored 71 points to take third; the top runner on the Saint Augustine school's team was sophomore Ana Whitehouse, seventh in 23:26. Aucilla Christian was fourth with 110 points, led by their top sophomore, Samantha Drawdy (18th, 25:15).


Maclay, Community Christian, and Saint Joseph qualified for the next round in the state championship series, the 1A Region 1 Championship Meet at New World Golf in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday morning, 6 November 2020.

In the girls' race, only Community Christian's Morgan Wilson prevented Maclay from having a perfect score. Similarly, in the boys' race only one runner came between Maclay and a perfect score. After Maclay's Leo Rutledge (1st, 17:24) and Jackson Yarbrough (2nd, 17:25) had taken the first two places for the Marauders, Saint Joseph sophomore Victor Farfan grabbed third with a 17:55.

But Farfan was followed by a lot of runners in Maclay blue. Marauder sophomore Clayton Knox was fourth in 18:05, Marauder sophomore Carter Rothell was fifth in 19:01, and Marauder junior Lawrence Bishop placed sixth in 19:13. That gave the Maclay boys eighteen points and the win.


Victor Farfan and Saint Joseph put up 69 points and grabbed the runner-up spot in 1A District 4. Community Christian, led by senior Nicholas Ciarlariello (8th, 19:26), scored 80 points for third.


Maclay, Saint Joseph, and Community Christian each advanced to the 1A Region 1 meet.

Pierre Pean and Ann Centner lead the mob at the Madness

Hundreds of meters ahead of the rest of the competitors, Pierre Pean and Joey Jung raced through Tallahassee, Florida's Phipps Park on Saturday morning, 17 August 2019--up and down hills, over dirt and turf, and even twice through water. At the finish line, though, it was Pean who prevailed, winning Gulf Winds Track Club's Miller Landing Madness 8K cross-country race and running 31:21 to Jung's 31:23. Ann Centner was the first woman in the five-mile contest, placing sixth overall in 33:04.

Staged in Phipps Park each August since 2008, the Miller Landing Madness has become known as Tallahassee's last cross-country race before the actual cross-country season. This is especially true for the two shorter races on the program, the 3K and the 5K. The three-kilometer race is usually the choice of middle school runners, while high school athletes generally opt for the five kilometer event. Those youngsters usually pass on the flagship eight kilometer race, which is usually won by older athletes. Notably, the course record in the 8K is the 25:54 run in 2011 the three-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan had indeed been a four-time Big Ten cross-country champion while at the University of Michigan, but those days as a college harrier were nearly two decades behind him when he raced the Phipps Park hills.


It might be a good rule of thumb that high school athletes don't win the Miller Landing Madness 8K, but Joey Jung was out to break that rule in the 2019 race. It didn't look like it early in the race. After the first of five miles, Pierre Pean was already leading the 8K, with Jung trailing by 40 meters. That deficit had grown to 80 meters by the end of the fourth mile. Jung didn't quit, and came back during the final mile. He was within striking distance on the homestretch, but Pean held him off, winning 31:21 to 31:23. Another Lincoln High cross-country runner, incoming frosh Connor Edwards, took third in 32:46. Hong-Guo Yu was the fastest master runner in the 8K, edging Khary Wright for fourth, 32:53 to 32:55.

A graduate student at Florida State University, Ann Centner has left her cross-country days at the University of Georgia and Oconee County High behind. Centner wasn't adverse to a little cross-country running in the Miller Landing Madness 8K, though, even it was only a week after she had been focused on track racing at the Breakfast on the Track Mile.


"I liked it," said Centner after the Madness 8K. "It was difficult. It might have been difficult because I was training for the mile for so long. It was fun, though."

The fun part could have been leading the women's field from start to finish while winning the race in 33:04. Amanda Sava, another Florida State graduate student, was runner-up in the women's division, finishing nineteenth overall in 34:51. Alyssa Moore took third in the women's standings with a 36:00, good for 28th overall. Lourena Maxwell was the top woman master and sixth female finisher, 34th overall in 37:20.

Pean and Centner had led their fields in the 8K nearly from the start. That wasn't the case in the 5K for Wakulla High senior Daniel Wiedeman, who shared the lead with a group of runners for more than half the race. Ultimately, Wiedeman left them behind.

"It was around the two-mile mark, near the water pit," recalled Wiedeman.


No one came back to challenge him as he raced the last mile alone to cross the finish line in a winning 18:32. Mason McCord, another Wakulla High senior, took second in 18:58. A few steps back, Florida High senior Morgan Castano was third in 19:01. Aaron Guyer was the first master runner in the 5K, sixteenth overall in 21:54.

Wiedeman is a veteran of the Miller Landing Madness, although this was his first win at the event. He and his Wakulla teammates were scheduled to be back in Phipps Park the following Saturday for a different race on a different 5K course at the Dueling Summits Cross-Country Meet.


"I've run Miller Landing Madness every year in high school," said Wiedeman. "I liked the old water trap better than the one we run through now. And I'm not going to like the hill next week, but I'm not going to miss the water trap."

Gracie Koeppel, an eighth-grader on the Maclay School cross-country team, won the women's title in the 5K at the Madness, placing twentieth overall in 22:14. Wakulla High senior Nina Prince outkicked Emily Smith for second in the women's standings, both runners clocked in 23:36. Prince and Smith were 34th and 35th overall.

Fifth place in the 5K went to an eighth-grader from Fairview Middle School, Patrick Koon. About 40 minutes after Koon had finished that race in 19:17, he was on the starting line for the Miller Landing Madness 3K, a race he had won in 2017. Even though it was his second race of the morning, Koon headed to the front of the pack early. Jackson Rowe, a Montford Middle School eighth-grader, went with him.

"We were running together for the first four-tenths of a mile," said Koon. "At the water pit I went through and he went around and that's where I got ahead of him."


Koon held on to that advantage, winning the race in 10:47. Rowe was second in 11:05. Noah Deem, a seventh-grader at Community Leadership Academy, placed third in 11:11.


"It's not a fast course, but it's a real fun course," said Koon, reflecting on the hills and the water hazard.

Koon had been a sixth grader when he won the Miller Landing Madness 3K for the first time. Clifton Lewis was a sixth grader when she ran the 2019 race, and she won the girls' division for the first time, placing thirteenth overall in 12:10. Sophia Youngberg, a Montford seventh-grader, was runner-up on the girls' side and 21st overall in 12:58. Leah Keller, an eighth-grader at Florida High, took third in the girls' standings and 29th overall in 13:32.

32:39 for Chris Haynes and 37:10 for Ann Centner in the 44th annual Springtime 10K

Saturday morning, 30 March 2019, in Tallahassee, Florida was marked with mild temperatures, sunny skies, and a gentle breeze. You’d think no one could ask for better conditions for Gulf Winds Track Club’s 44th annual Springtime Road Race.


“It felt a lot more humid than I thought it would be,” said Chris Haynes. “The temperature was perfect, but I really noticed the humidity on the second mile.”

There's always a critic. But by the time Haynes had noticed the humidity, he had dropped the last of the competition on his way to winning the Springtime 10K for a third year in a row, running 32:39. Ann Centner snagged her first Springtime women’s title, placing ninth overall in 37:10.


Overnight cloudiness was dissipating when the runners started to assemble on South Monroe Street in front of the Leon County Courthouse for the start of the 10K and it’s sister race, the Springtime 5K. By the end of the first mile, Chris Haynes and Austin Whitelaw were out in front of everyone, 5K and 10K runner alike, racing next to one another on Franklin Boulevard.

“Austin was coming off the Tallahassee Marathon,” said Haynes. “He’s still recovering from that. The second and third mile is where we climb up, and I tried to make a break there.”


He succeeded in shaking off Whitelaw on the Myers Park hills. Halfway through the race, Haynes was half a minute ahead. That lead grew to nearly two minutes during the second half of racing, as Haynes went on to take first in 32:39. Whitelaw was runner-up in 34:36. Charlie Johnson, who had dueled with Haynes during the first half of the 2017 Springtime, was third in 35:03. Hong-Guo Yu was the fastest master runner in the 10K, thirteenth overall in 38:44.

“I had a root canal two days ago,” said Haynes. I’m on a lot of antibiotics. The race didn’t feel as easy as the last two years, but that could be the medication.”


Which isn’t the worst of it. The recent dental work prevents Haynes from biting down, keeping him from his favorite foods.


“I’ll be glad when I can eat doughnuts and whatever I like again,” said Haynes.

“I’m only on the antibiotics for five more days, and then I can get in some good training. My next race with probably be the Rose City 10K. Three good weeks of training, then Rose City.”


Haynes is the defending champion at Thomasville, Georgia's Rose City race, where Ann Centner is the defending women's champ. Centner ran her personal best for 10K at Rose City last year, but took over a minute off that at Springtime.

“My previous best was a 38:27 at Rose City, but I went through the first 10K at the Tallahassee Half Marathon in 38:20,’ said Centner. “The weather helped a lot today. Rose City was hot, and this race was much cooler.”


After that fast split during the half marathon, Centner entered Springtime with ambitious goals.


“The plan was to break 38:00, because I have been having really good workouts,” said Centner. “I went out way too fast for the first mile and the first 5K. I ran the first half in 18:20.”

18:20 fast enough to win the women’s division in more than a few weekend 5K road races, but so was the 18:50 that Centner ran for the second half of the race. Her winning time, 37:10, was the fastest women’s performance at Springtime since 2013, when Stefanie Slekis ran 36:05.


Sheryl Rosen, a two-time Springtime women's champ, took second to Centner, placing fourteenth overall in 38:50. Amanda Sava placed third in the women's standings and 28th overall in a personal best 41:42. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and tenth female finisher, 52nd overall in 43:49.

There’s more racing ahead in April for Springtime’s first woman.


“The Palace Saloon 5K and Rose City,” said Centner. “And I’m thinking of trying the Red Hill Triathlon. We’ll see.”

While Haynes and Centner were still negotiating the hills in Myers Park, the fastest runners in the 5K were crossing the finish line. Jake Poore, an alumnus of the Land O' Lakes High cross-country team, was first in 17:29. Wyatt Townsend, an eighth-grader at Deerlake and Florida's 2018 middle school cross-country state champion, took second in 17:39. Michael Niezgoda edged the early leader, Matt Mizereck, for third, 17:56 to 17:59.


Grace Koeppel placed first in the women's standings, finishing seventeenth overall in 19:57. Koeppel is a seventh-grader on the Maclay School cross-country team. Samantha Reilly was the women's runner-up, placing 25th overall in 21:01. Alyssa Terry was the third women and 28th overall in 21:06.

792 athletes finished the 2019 Springtime 10K, while 620 completed the 5K. Yet another 97 ran a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.
