Leon County Schools' 2019 middle school cross country schedule

The summer seems long, but there really aren't that many weeks of training till late August and the start of cross-country season. In Tallahassee, Florida, for the middle school harriers of Leon County Schools, the 2019 cross-country schedule has been set. Summer mileage now has a purpose. These are the meets the athletes are preparing for.

Like 2018, it's a six-meet season. Like 2018, the races will be three kilometers. Let's hope that unlike 2018, there aren't any rained-out races.

Whatever happens with the weather, many of the faces will be different. Swift Creek's Paige Churchill, three-time League Champion for the girls, has moved on to high school, as has her rival, Maya Tang of Deerlake. You won't be seeing any Churchill-Tang duels in the 2019 middle school races. Nor will you be seeing Deerlake's Wyatt Townsend running away with boys' races. Townsend is also heading to high school, following a 2018 season where he never lost a race and took both the League Championship and a State Title.

In team competition, the Swift Creek girls will be working for a third-straight Leon County Schools title. The Deerlake boys will also be trying for a third-straight League Championship. The other teams in the ten-school conference will be doing their best to end those streaks.

The Leon County Schools meets aren't the only middle school cross-country meets in town. Holy Comforter Episcopal School hosts two very important events, the Crusader Cross-Country Classic on Thursday, 19 September 2019, and the Tallahassee Open on Tuesday, 8 October 2019. While the 2018 boys' state champ in middle school cross-country, Wyatt Townsend, was winning all the LCS races, Ella Porcher of Maclay, the girls' champ, was winning the 2018 Holy Comforter meets. The Tallahassee Open is a state qualifier, so you may very well see another State Champ or two racing there.

Additionally, several Tallahassee-area cross-country meets will include middle school races during the 2019 season. The Cougar Cross-Country Challenge at Phipps Park on Saturday, 24 August 2019 is the earliest, followed by the Big Bend Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday, 31 August 2019. For the first time, Saint John Paul II will include a 3K middle school race in their Panther Invitational, scheduled for Saturday, 7 September 2019 on their Southwood campus. Just north of Tallahassee, a middle school two-mile will again be included in the Bearcat Invitational at Bainbridge High on Saturday, 21 September 2019. And there will be middle school races on Friday, 11 October 2019 during the Florida State University Cross-Country Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park.

So if you see any middle school athletes running on the Tallahassee trails this summer, now you know why they're out training.
