Owl Run is almost all-Montford

The 25th annual Owl Run, the third meet of the 2012 Leon County Schools' middle-school cross-country season, belonged to Montford Middle School. In the Thursday morning meet at Everhart School on 20 September 2012, the Mustangs tallied narrow team victories in both the girls' and the boys' two-mile races, and Montford's Saige Kemeny outkicked Audrey Dogan of Raa for the individual title in the girls' race. Only the win by Raa's Matthew Cashin in the boys' race broke the Montford monopoly on the winners circle.

Following the Everhart run, the middle school competition opened with the girls' two-mile race. About 600 yards from the start, Raa's Audrey Dogan was the clear leader.  Dogan had scored wins in the first two meets of the season, the Battle at Tom Brown and the Fort Braden Run. The 2011 Owl Run champion, Zoe Sheldon of Swift Creek, trailed Dogan in third place, with Montford's Saige Kemeny in fourth. The runners left the Everhart School grounds to race on the streets, where Kemeny moved to the front, taking the field through the mile at 6:33. Dogan was a step behind, with Sheldon a few more steps back in third, and Deerlake's Ana Wallace shadowing Sheldon in fourth. Those four runners held their positions through the streets and back to the school grounds, where Kemeny and Dogan started to pull away. With the finish line in sight, Dogan started her kick and passed Kemeny. Just before the finish line Kemeny regained the lead and triumphed over Dogan, 13:18.51 to 13:18.67. Sheldon was thirdin 13:32 and Wallace fourth in 13:41. Montford's Caroline Grace Brantley placed fifth in 14:05, joining teammates Kemeny and Emily Culley (9th, 14:49) in the top ten to set up Montford's 46 to 49 victory over runners-up Swift Creek in the team standings. The Raa girls were third with 70 points.

The boys' two mile followed the girls' race, just after 11:30 AM. Griffin's Etavious Milton led through the first half mile with Raa's Matthew Cashin right behind him; the rest of the field was 70 yards back. Cashin took the lead before the mile mark, by which time he and Cashin were 150 yards up on the other runners. During the second mile Cashin widened his gap over Milton.  Running in third place, Montford's Matthew Newland started to gain on the Griffin runner. Their positions didn't changed before the finish line, though, and Cashin crossed the line in 12:01, adding an Owl Run win to his titles at Tom Brown and Fort Braden. Milton was runner-up in 12:29, and Newland outlasted Swift Creek's Stephen Veliz 12:38 to 12:41 to take third. The Newland-over-Veliz finish presaged the outcome in the team standings, where Montford successfully defended their 2011 Owl Run title, edging out Swift Creek 56 to 57. The Fairview boys scored 68 to take third.
