Ponch Leonard and Amy Hines rewrite the records at the Saint Peter's 10K

You might remember Poncherella Leonard for some notable second-place finishes in the Tallahassee, Florida area when he was a cross-country runner at Bainbridge High. During his career as a Bearcat distance man, Leonard was second with a 16:56 in the boys' 5K at the 2015 Bearcat Cross-Country Invitational, runner-up at 16:47 in the 2016 Bowlegs 5K, and ran 16:17 to finish second to Stan Linton in the 2016 Bainbridge Memorial Day 5K Night Race.


But Ponch Leonard wasn't second to anyone on Saturday, 16 June 2018. That morning, Leonard won the second annual Saint Peter's Anglican Cathedral 10K, finishing more than a kilometer ahead of the next runner. Leonard's time, 35:52, set a new course record, trimming more than six minutes from the old standard of 42:02, set by Ann Centner in the 2017 race. Amy Hines, the top woman in the race, set a new Saint Peter's 10K women's record, placing second overall in 40:11.

Brad Busboom was second in the men's standings and third overall in 40:53. Geb Kiros was the top master runner in the race, the third male finisher and fourth overall in 41:30.


Elisha Boggs was the first woman master and second female finisher, placing fifth overall in 43:42. Nancy Moody edged Laura Hansen for the third woman's spot, 52:09 to 52:12. Moody and Hansen placed fifteenth and sixteenth overall.


Leonard, the 2018 Saint Peter's 10K winner, wrapped up his high school running career at Bainbridge High at the end of the 2017 track season. Since then, Leonard has gone on to the University of Tennessee-Martin, where he just finished the 2018 track season as a redshirt. During that spring, Leonard recorded season bests of 16:00.87 in the 5000, 4:07.24 in the 1500, and 1:56.91 in the 800.


145 athletes finished the 2018 Saint Peter's 10K, and another 43 completed a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.
