Scott Lloyd and Alyssa Terry had the keys to the Sanctuary at the Wakulla Springs 5K

South of Tallahassee, Florida, Wakulla Springs State Park is a special place. The park's sanctuary is even more special. Anyone can go to the park, but admission to the sanctuary is tightly restricted. There aren't many ways to see that parcel of land. You could train for years, become a Florida Department of Environmental Protection park ranger, and hope to be assigned to Wakulla Springs. You could study entomology, choose deer ticks as the topic of your doctoral dissertation, and apply to be allowed to do your research in the sanctuary. You could disguise yourself as an alligator and crawl into the sanctuary. Astral projection, maybe?

One sure way of getting into the sanctuary, though, is to run the annual 5K race hosted by the Friends of Wakulla Springs, which takes runners on a 3.1-mile tour of that very special tract of land. 153 athletes did just that at the thirteenth annual Friends of Wakulla Springs 5K on Saturday morning, 11 May 2019. The fastest in the group was Scott Lloyd; the former Wakulla High cross-country runner won the race in 19:34. Tallahassee speech-language pathologist Alyssa Terry was the top woman in the race for the second year in a row, placing seventh overall in 22:08.

"I had actually planned to take it easy during today’s race," said Terry. "I followed this plan for the first half mile or so, but I felt good and was enjoying the course so I ended up picking it up a bit more and more throughout the race."

Florida State University meteorology professor Philip Sura repeated as the first master runner in the 5K, finishing second overall in 19:54. Timothy Qualls took third in 20:11.

At the end of the race there were three athletes with a chance at the runner-up spot in the women's standings--Amelia Bryant, Emily Smith, and Megan Chapman. Bryant finished just ahead of the other two in 23:12, coming in fifteenth overall. Smith and Chapman were sixteenth and seventeenth overall, both runners clocked in 23:13. Nancy Stedman of Tallahassee was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 22nd overall in 24:11.

153 athletes finished the 2019 Wakulla Springs 5K. The race was chip-timed by Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee.
