Tallahassee distance runners head to Bradenton for the 2019 Middle School Track State Championship

The Florida Youth Running Association's eighteenth annual Middle School Track & Field State Championships are at IMG Stadium in Bradenton, Florida on Saturday morning, 11 May 2019. Tallahassee will be represented.

This will be the sixth year in a row that Florida's Middle School State Meet has been run at IMG Academy. FLRunners hosted the first championship meet in 2002; FLYRA became a co-host in 2012. It's not easy to track the participation of Tallahassee athletes because they seldom competed under the name of their schools, forced by the perversity of the rules or the perversity of their coaches to enter unattached or as a member of a club. But it does look like Capital City student-athletes went to State as early as 2003, the same year that Meryl Walker and Laura Kuhse brought home Tallahassee's first state titles. Both Maclay School students, Walker won the girls' pole vault (2.13 meters) and Kuhse took first in the girls' triple jump (8.81 meters).

Those were field events, of course. Tallahassee's runners first brought home gold in 2004, when Joe Franklin won the boys' 800 in 2:00.61 and the 1500 in 4:19.27, both meet records.

Tallahassee will be sending a strong contingent of distance runners to the 2019 meet. Maclay eighth-grader Ella Porcher was the 2018 FLYRA state champion in cross-country; she's entered in the 800 and the 1500. Likewise, Deerlake eighth-grader Wyatt Townsend is the reigning FLYRA state champion in boys' cross-country, and he'll be competing in the 1500 and the 3000.
