The Children's Volunteer Health Network's annual running event in Watercolor, Florida is called the Smile Mile. There is indeed a one-mile race at the Smile Mile, but the headliner is a longer race, a 5K. And on Saturday morning, 11 May 2019, Manuel Cavazos won the third annual Smile Mile 5K by close to 200 meters, running 17:58. Kailand Cosgrove, formerly of the Florida State University Lady Seminoles cross-country team, was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 19:22.Cavazos had just barely made it into the top ten of the Smile Mile 5K in 2018, finishing ninth in 19:12. But in 2019 he improved that performance by over a minute to get the win. Griffin Jones of Marietta, Georgia finished runner-up to Cavazos in 18:40. Pensacola, Florida's Yancey Ream was the top master runner in the race and the third male finisher, fourth overall in 19:28.
Amanda Skinner was second in the women's standings, placing 21st overall in 23:24. Hillary Fosdyck was the third woman in the 5K and 24th overall in 24:20. Simona Faroni was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 28th overall in 24:39.
186 athlete finished the 5K at the 2019 Smile Mile, and another 66 completed the one-mile fun run. Both races were run on USATF-certified courses and chip timed by AltaVista Sports.
