Tallahassee Dreamin'--Avery Bartlett will race the Dream Mile

Avery BartlettOn Saturday afternoon, 13 June 2015, at 12:35 PM ET, 14 of the fastest high school milers in the country will toe the line on the Icahn Stadium track in New York. The occasion is the sixth annual Adidas Golden Stripes Dream Mile, and for the second year in a row there will be a Tallahassee, Florida, athlete competing. The Capital City's own Avery Bartlett, a recent graduate of Chiles High, will be on the track.


Athletes are invited to the Dream Mile based on their times, or on a win at designated "automatic qualifier" races. Bartlett followed the automatic qualifier route to New York, earning his spot in the race with a win in the Orlando, Florida, Golden South Classic mile on 23 May 2015. Bartlett blazed a career-best 4:08.55, edging out Connor Mantz of Sky View High in Utah. The times were fast enough that Mantz was also invited to the Dream Mile. Mantz also raced the Dream Mile in 2014, placing tenth in 4:07.63, his best mark to date.


Bartlett was one of four auto-qualifiers in the field. Phillip Hall, a graduating senior at South View High in Fayetteville, North Carolina, punched his ticked to New York with a 4:15.10 win in the Raleigh Relays mile on 27 March 2015. A day later, Brea Olinda high junior Austin Tamagno qualified with a 4:06.26 win in the mile at the Adidas Azusa Meet of Champions in Azusa, California. And on 15 April 2015 Matt Plowman, a senior at fabled York High in Elmhurst, Illinois, qualified with a 4:11.43 win in the 1600 at the Kansas Relays.


Connor Mantz won't be the only 2014 Dream Miler returning to Icahn Stadium. The defending champion, Grant Fisher, is also entered. The Grand Blanc High senior ran 4:02.02 in the 2014 race; more recently he cracked four minutes at the Nike Festival of Miles on 4 June 2015, running 3:59.38. No one else in the Dream Mile has run within four seconds of that this year, making Fisher the obvious favorite. Still, it's more than possible that any of these runners could have a breakthrough race.
Avery Bartlett

Whatever Avery Bartlett runs in New York, he's already had a senior track season and a high school career to inspire jealousy. Before he even stepped on the track at Golden South, Bartlett was already Florida's class 3A state champion in the 1600 and the 800. He had also won the 2014 state title in the 800. Bartlett's efforts were essential to Chiles winning team titles in track and field in 2014 and 2015, as well as Chiles' 2014 team title in cross country. He'll be going on to Georgia Tech in the fall, but Bartlett and thirteen other Dream Milers get one more chance to show what they can achieve as a high school athlete this Saturday in Icahn Stadium.

Bartlett and Tucker lead the milers at Chiles

Girl milersMaybe it's just a minority opinion that I hold, but I really believe that you can get so cold that it's painful. I know that was the case in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday afternoon, 28 February 2015. It was a cold, wet, and windy day at the Chiles High School track, and after a while it just hurt to be out there.


But you aren't much of a track fan if you won't endure some misery to see a few sections of the mile, and there were three sections of the 1600 that day at the 15th annual Chiles Track and Field Championships--one girls' section, and two boys' sections. If the weather had been like this at Oxford on 6 May 1954, Roger Bannister would have called off his attempt at a sub-4:00 mile. But even as the wind blew at Chiles, the races went on.


The girls ran first. Chiles juniors Alex Wallace and Emma Tucker set the pace for the field for the first three laps, blocking the wind for a lead pack of six runners that also included Buchholz senior Sarah Edens, Chiles frosh Ana Wallace, Chiles junior Juliana Krueger, and Maclay sophomore Caroline Willis. With 200 meters to go Willis bolted to the front and started her drive toward the finish line. As the lead pack stretched out, Tucker kept her sights on Willis. Tucker accelerated on the homestretch, overtaking Willis then charging across the finish line to a 5:25.68 win. Willis was second in 5:27.13, and Ana Wallace edged Alex Wallace for third, 5:29.78 to 5:29.91.

The first of the two boys' sections followed. Carrollton (Georgia) frosh Donald Sener led the field through a 74-second first lap, followed by an 80-second second lap. The pace lagged further on the third lap and Leon sophomore caught Sener with 400 meters to go. Foster ran wide on Sener's shoulder till the last 200, when the Leon runner surged ahead, grabbed the pole, and ran home to win the section in 5:07.89. Sener was second in 5:10.34, and Andrew Rakestraw of the Florida State University School placed third in the section with a 5:17.69.

The second section produced all the scoring in the event, though. Almost from the crack of the starting pistol, Chiles senior Avery Bartlett was out in front, setting the pace. It wasn't the torrid pace you might expect from the state champ at 800 meters and a 4:16.79 1600-meter man, however. Bartlett passed 400 at 70 and 800 at 2:19. The third lap was a bit quicker, but the final lap was when Bartlett took off. As the big senior blasted a 57-second fourth lap, fans scrambled to check their watches to see if Bartlett had a chance at Matt Mizereck's 2010 meet record, 4:24.10. The record would live another year; Bartlett crossed the line in 4:25.26. Chiles seniors Tyson Murray and Allan Hernandez placed second and third in 4:30.63 and 4:30.90.

Feasting on the middle distances at the Chiles Classic

Sukhi KhoslaSome folks divine their financial and romantic fortune by examining tea leaves. If you want a forecast of what you might see at a track meet, though, you'd do better to examine the heat sheets. The list for Chiles High School's 15th annual Capital City Track & Field Classic prophesied hot times in the 1600. It turned out to be good prophecy.


Another kind of forecast, the weather forecast, threatened to get in the way, though. A line of storms marching across the Florida panhandle toward Tallahassee scared Chiles into changing the meet schedule, moving to an earlier 10:00 AM start. In the end, the meteorologists might as well have stuck with tea leaves. The worst weather stayed out in the Gulf of Mexico, and Tallahassee saw barely more than a trace of rain all day Saturday. If anything, a few more clouds would have been welcome. The Saturday, 5 April 2014, track meet was warm and bright.


In the girls' 1600, Chiles senior Ashton McMurray shrugged off early challenges from Maclay frosh Caroline Willis and FAMU frosh Audrey Dogan to win the race. Running all but alone for the second half of the race, McMurray clocked a 5:15.52 for the not-quite-a-mile race.

Sukhi Khosla
With three sub-4:20 athletes in the field of the boys' 1600, it's surprising that no one went with Leon junior Sukhi Khosla when he went through the first lap in 65 seconds. That's what reputation will do for you, though; with a 4:13.02 to his credit, Khosla is the state leader in the 1600. He turned it up a notch on the second 400, running a 63 second split and leaving everyone else far behind. Khosla went faster still for the second 800, finishing the race in 4:14.92 and taking out the twelve-year-old meet record of 4:17.39, set in 2002 by Lincoln sophomore Ryan Deak.

Ashton McMurray was back later in the girls' 800. She stayed tucked back in the pack during the first 400, while Valdosta junior Desmeonna McDuffie led. McMurray took charge during the second lap. Florida State University School junior Amanda Toothman tried to keep up, but McMurray won going away in 2:30.21, while Toothman was second in 2:33.50.

Chiles Capital City ClassicChiles junior Avery Bartlett had finished second to Sukhi Khosla in the 1600, but he got a second crack at the Leon junior in the boys' 800. It was a third junior who led the first lap, though, Thomasville High's Travet Witherspoon. While Witherspoon rocketed around the track, Bartlett hit the 400 in second place at 59.95. Khosla went after Bartlett just after 400, but Bartlett held him off on the turn. Just past 500 meters, Witherspoon wilted. Bartlett and Khosla thundered past him. Khosla continued to challenge for the lead all the way to 700 meters, but Bartlett denied him. The last 100 meters belonged to Bartlett, who raced home in a winning 1:55.89, his personal best. Khosla's 1:56.86 second-place effort was also a PR. Maclay senior Connor Daughton took third in 1:58.68.
