Trent Parsons and Madeline Frank triumph at the Trent

2025 Trent 5K logo"Cancelled due to ice!" is not a message you expect to see regarding a road race in Tallahassee, Florida. Nevertheless, that was the word on the 2025 Trent 10K, courtesy of Winter Storm Enzo. But the streets weren't icy enough to stop either the Trent 5K race or the Trent one-mile fun run. Those events went ahead as planned on Saturday morning, 25 January 2025. Trent Parsons won the 5K by sixty meters, running 17:27. Madeline Frank was the first woman in that 3.1-mile race, coming in sixth overall in 18:04.

Aside from sharing a name with the race, Trent Parsons has a long connection with the Trent. A sophomore-year cross-country runner at Lincoln High, Parsons has run the Trent multiple times going back to 2019, running the 5K twice and the 10K twice. 2025 was his first Trent win.

In order to get that win, Parsons had to outrun Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete, the 2023 Trent 10K champ. Canete finished the 2025 Trent 5K in 17:39, coming in runner-up to Parsons. A few steps behind Canete, another Lincoln High cross-country runner, frosh Stokes Bryan, edged out Kyle Olson for third, 17:43 to 17:45.

The 5K may have been Madeline Frank's first Trent win, but it wasn't her first win of the year. Just a week earlier, Frank had been the top woman in the Gulf Winds Track Club 15K, somewhat further out of Tallahassee on Centerville Road than Roberts Elementary School, the site of the Trent.

Finishing runner-up to Frank in the women's standings, Nancy Moody was the first woman master in the race, placing eleventh overall in 21:31. Master runner Kim Katzenbach was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 23:29.

156 athletes finished the 2025 Trent 5K.

First woman, first master, first overall--Katie Sherron was the First Lady of the GWTC 30K

In the days leading up to Saturday morning, 18 January 2025, Tallahassee, Florida was getting weather forecasts with the apocalyptic tone that meteorologists usually reserve for hurricane season. There would be rain--inches of it. Then the temperatures would plunge to below freezing, frigid for the region. Then the precipitation would return but as snow. Or freezing rain. Or both. There would likely be polar bear attacks.

When the predicted rain finally did show up on Saturday, it was many hours after the 48th annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K was complete--fortunate because the antebellum-era dirt roads that the race has been run on for the past two decades are less than perfect during rain. But the running surface was excellent in the morning, and master runner Katie Sherron took advantage of the good roads. She won the race in 1:58:17, the fastest time ever run by a woman on the Old Centerville Road course. Charlie Johnson, Tallahassee master runner and triathlete, was the first male finisher in the 30K, coming in second overall in 1:59:36.

It was cool and cloudy when the race started from the Retreat at Bradley's Pond, just after 8:00 AM. Very early on, Gary Rowan of Adel, Georgia was setting the pace for the 30K field. Rowan was still leading after seven kilometers, not quite halfway to the turnaround of the out-and-back course. Charlie Johnson was not far behind, and Katie Sherron was moving into contention. With ten kilometers to go, Johnson was the leader with Sherron 150 meters back in second.

"I hit the turnaround at about 59:45," recalled Sherron. "Charlie and I had talked about trying to break two hours and we both did it."

But Sherron did it first. After going out in 59:45, she made the return trip over a minute faster, overtaking Johnson on the way. She was nearly 300 meters ahead when she crossed the finish line in a winning 1:58:17. Johnson took second overall in 1:59:35, the first male finisher in the 30K. Rowan was third overall and second in the men's standings at 2:01:31.

Fabrizio Gowdy and Madeline Frank raced with hearts of oak at the Pine Run

Gulf Winds Track Club's Pine Run 20K is, of course, a race--a cross-country race. But on Saturday morning, 12 October 2024, the 45th annual Pine Run 20K was indeed a race. During the seventeenth kilometer, Florida State University undergrad Fabrizio Gowdy grabbed the lead from Leonardo Canete, a Tallahassee master runner and the defending champion. Gowdy then went on to charge home in a winning 1:16:55. In the women's competition, master runner Megan Noonan dogged the leader, Madeline Frank, for fifteen kilometers before Frank broke away to take the women's title in 1:28:43, placing tenth overall.

Fabrizio Gowdy
Fabrizio Gowdy

There are only three hours each year that the grounds of the Tall Timbers Research Station, north of Tallahassee, Florida, are open to running. Those are the three hours allotted to the Pine Run 20K. Those three hours got started at about 7:40 AM, ten minutes later than scheduled. A few minutes after that, 1500 meters into the 20K, Leonardo Canete was 60 meters ahead of the field. By the halfway point in the race, Canete had stretched his lead to well over a hundred meters.

But the lead was done growing. Behind Canete, Fabrizio Gowdy had moved into second. A student at Florida State University, Gowdy had raced cross-country in Tallahassee before, competing in the High School State Championships at Apalacheee Regional Park with Stanton Prep in 2019 and 2020. This was his first Pine Run, but he was finding the 20K to his liking. DuringFabrizio Gowdy the second half of the race, he gradually pulled to within sight of Canete. At sixteen kilometers, Gowdy was less than 40 meters behind the leader. One kilometer later he was in the lead. Gowdy opened a gap of close to 300 meters on the way to the finish line, taking first in 1:16:55.

Canete was the first master runner in the 20K, finishing runner-up in 1:18:01. Stokes Bryan, a frosh-year harrier on the Lincoln High cross-country team, was third in 1:21:48.

After the first of the twenty kilometers of the Pine Run, Madeline Frank and Megan Noonan were running just a few steps apart, leading the women's field. After ten kilometers, Frank and Noonan were still just a few steps apart. But by the fifteen-kilometer mark, Frank had broken contact with Noonan. At twenty kilometers Frank crossed the finish line 300 meters ahead of Noonan in a winning 1:28:43.

Noonan was the first woman master and second female finisher, fourteenth overall in 1:30:09. Tallahassee Triathlete and master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant took third in the women's standings, coming in eighteenth overall in 1:33:39.

133 athletes finished the 2024 Pine Run 20K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the event.

Madeline Frank leaves everyone behind at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival

On Saturday morning, 21 September 2024, during the 42nd running of Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival, the streets of Indianhead Acres saw an example of "the loneliness of the long distance runner."

Madeline Frank

"I felt pretty good, but I was alone out there," said Madeline Frank.

The "loneliness of the long distance runner" that Frank experienced in Tallahassee, Florida's Indianhead neighborhood on Saturday morning, 21 September 2024, was entirely of her own making. It was because she had run faster than her competitors in Gulf Winds Track Club's Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K--fast enough to have finished over 200 meters ahead of the rest of the field.

Stephanie Liles-Weyant

As has become the annual procedure at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival, the women started in a wave at 8:00 AM, five minutes before the men's wave. At the first turn, 600 meters north of the starting line, Madeline Frank and Tallahassee master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant were already well ahead of the rest of the field, with Frank a few steps up on Liles-Weyant. Frank steadily turned those few steps first into a few dozen and then into many dozens on her way around the course to a 19:09 win.

Liles-Weyant was the first woman master runner in the 5K, placing second in 20:03. Another Tallahassee master runner, Vicky Droze, took third in 22:36.

Ryan Ziskinder

In the men's wave, the loneliness started for Ryan Ziskinder right after the start. A Palm City, Florida athlete, Ziskinder got away from the men's field field almost immediately, after which the only athletes he encountered on the course were those who had started earlier in the women's wave. There were quite a few of those, though--Ziskinder caught everyone in that wave except for the first two women, Madeline Frank and Stephanie Liles-Weyant. The first man over the finish line, Ziskinder ran 15:40--the fastest time at the Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival since 2016, when Stan Linton when 15:29.

Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee, the winner of the men's division at the race in 2021 and 2023, was the first male master, coming in runner-up to Ziskinder in 17:42. Elijah Oquendo took third in the men's wave, running 18:11.

71 women and 66 men finished Gulf Winds Track Club's 2024 Tallahassee Women's Distance Festival 5K. Another four athletes completed a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.
