Kiros and Cox find their stride at Strides For Education 5K

Trotting across the finish line over 400 meters ahead of the next competitor, master runner Geb Kiros won the inaugural Strides For Education 5K in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday morning, 7 June 2014. The FAMU biostatistics professor raced round the 3.1-mile course on the Tallahassee Community College campus in 18:01. Philip Sura, a Tallahassee master runner and professor of Meteorology at FSU, finished runner-up in 19:38. Yet a third master runner, Duane Evans of Crawfordville, was third in 20:00.


Breaking the master monopoly on the top places, Renee Cox of Tallahassee placed fourth in the race in 20:31, the top female finisher. The women's runner up was master runner Jennifer Shafer; Shafer finished eighth overall in 22:58. Katie Sack was third on the women's side, coming in 10th overall in 24:16.


95 athletes finished the first-year race. The 2014 Strides For Education 5K was contested on USATF certified course FL14006EBM, the same route used for the 2014 Run For The Cookie 5K earlier in the year.
