Rewarding returns to the Red Pepper Run 5K for Josiah Friddle and Eden Keene

Saint George Island, Florida's Chili Cookoff is one of those annual events that people come back to year after year. So is the road race associated with the Chili Cookoff, the Red Pepper Run 5K. For instance, Josiah Friddle ran the Red Pepper in 2021 and 2022, and won the race in 2023. The Franklin County High junior returned on Saturday morning, 2 March 2024, and won again, this time running 19:35. Master runner Eden Keene, the women's runner-up in 2023, was the women's champ in 2024, placing seventh overall in 24:22.


A cross-country runner on his Franklin County High team, Friddle finished the 2024 Red Pepper 5K with a lead of nearly 400 meters, his winning time more than 50 seconds faster than he had run in the 2023 race. Ryley Sullivan came in runner-up to Friddle, going 21:00 for 5K. The next three athletes were all clocked in 24:06, with Kasey Chism edging Harry Curtains and Barney Ray for third. Ray, the top master runner in 2023, repeated as top master in 2024.


Eden Keene had likewise been the first woman master in 2023; she was again in 2024 by virtue of being first woman overall. Addyson Paul, a frosh-year cross-country runner on the Franklin County High team, took second in the women's standings behind Keene, coming in ninth overall in 24:59. Master runner Genee Meleski was the third woman and tenth overall in 25:06. Meleski had been the Red Pepper Run women's champ in 2022.


153 athletes finished Saint George Island's 2024 Red Pepper Run 5K. The race was part of the 42nd annual Saint George Island Chili Cookoff.
