Josiah Friddle came from near, Lana McDaniel from afar, to win the Red Pepper 5K

Josiah Friddle is a sophomore at Franklin County High School, just outside of Eastpoint, Florida. The school is just off US 98, a coastal road along Apalachicola Bay. You can't see the water from the school building, but if you walk from the school out to the highway, you can see Saint George Island across the bay. That island, just in sight of the school where Friddle runs cross-country, is where the sophomore won the Red Pepper Run 5K on Saturday morning, 3 March 2023, running 20:26. Of course, attending school near the race isn't a requirement for victory. Fourteen-year-old Lana McDaniel studies in Atlanta, Georgia, several hundred miles from Saint George Island, but nevertheless took the Red Pepper Run women's title, placing ninth overall in 24:32.


Friddle's winning 20:26 was faster than the 20:49 he had run for fifth place in the 2022 Red Pepper Run, as well as the 20:57 he had run for fourth place in the 2021 race. Behind Friddle, Brennan Ausloos edged Brad Givens for the runner-up spot, 20:52 to 20:54. Barney Ray was the top master runner in the race, placing fifth overall in 22:59.


Finishing a few seconds after Lana McDaniel, master runner Eden Keene was the women's runner-up, placing tenth overall in 23:39. Master runner Genee Meleski, the 2022 Red Pepper Run women's champ, took third in the women's standings, placing fourteenth overall in 25:25.


145 athletes finished Saint George Island's 2023 Red Pepper Run 5K. The race was part of the 41st annual Saint George Island Chili Cookoff.
