The Horse Creek Wine Run 5K is a cross-country run, almost completely off pavement, which I view as a good thing. The race is also in a vineyard, which has to be scenic. But the course seems designed do drive athletes mad. You run up one alley between rows of vines, then turn and run down the next alley. Then up the alley after that. Then down another alley. Then up an alley....You run about twenty alleys in all, with a couple of breaks along the way, like a run around a stormwater treatment pond. But I have to tell you that there are worse ways to run a race. I once did a three mile that was 33 circuits of an indoor track, and circling an outdoor track 25 times during a 10,000-meter race is routine. And then there were the inddor marathons of the early 1900s.
Nevertheless, 114 athletes showed up at Horse Creek Winery on Sunday, 12 March 2023, and ran the third annual Wine Run 5K. Not a one was scared off by the course. Daniel Cook was the class of the field that day, running 3.1 miles through the vines in a winning 26:23. Master runner Haley Eidson was the first woman in the 5K, placing seventh overall in 36:55.
Thomasville, Georgia's Shane Roberts was the first master runner in the race, finishing second overall in 31:42. Ben Eidson, a master runner from Hahira, Georgia, placed third in 32:24.
Roxana Bergstrom of Valdosta, Georgia was the women's runner up, placing eighth overall in 37:07. Master runner Jessica Crannis was the third woman and ninth overall in 37:53.
Of the 114 athletes who finished the 2023 Wine Run 5K, 96 were women and only 18 were men.
