Leonard Canete and Carolina Manceaux pluck victories at Valdosta's Azalea Run

Azalea BlossomValdosta-Lowndes Country Park and Recreation Authority's annual Azalea Festival 5K came back to the streets of Valdosta, Georgia on Saturday morning, 11 March 2023. Blossoms on azalea bushes bloom in clusters, but the winner of the 2023 Azalea Road Race was all by himself. Leonardo Canete, a Tallahassee, Florida master runner, won the race in 16:32, finishing nearly 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Valdosta's Carolina Marie Manceaux was the first woman in the 5K, placing twelfth overall in 24:49.

Nathan Godsey finished runner-up to Canete in 17:46. A Fredricksburg, Virginia athlete, Godsey runs cross-country at Stafford High School, currently in the short break between indoor track season and outdoor track season. Aaron Farris of Hahira, Georgia took third, running 19:02--over a minute faster than his runner-up performance in the 2022 Azalea 5K.

Two ten-year-old Valdosta schoolgirls vied for the second spot in the women's standings--Bailey Hamilton and Hensley Wall. Both runners were clocked in 25:55, but Hamilton made it across the finish line inches ahead of Wall. Hamilton placed fifteenth overall and Wall sixteenth. Xiaoai Ren of Hahira was the first woman master and ninth female finisher in the 5K, 27th overall in 31:43.

63 athletes finished the 2023 Azalea Festival Road Race. The race was hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
