Erick Requadt and Hannah Colligan were flying high at the Azalea 5K

Azalea BlossomSaturday, 9 March 2019, was the day of Valdosta, Georgia's annual Azalea Festival. It was also the day of the River Run, and 30 Valdosta athletes traveled to Jacksonville, Florida to finish that 15K race. Even more were back in Valdosta for the nineteenth annual Azalea 5K that morning, a good morning for the United States Air Force. Erick Requadt, an Airman First Class stationed at Moody Air Force Base, won the 3.1-mile race around the Valdosta State University campus, running 20:09. Hannah Colligan, a Valdosta State student and AFROTC cadet, was the first woman in the race, coming in third overall in 22:17.

Rafael Balleza of Jennings, Florida, a former Hamilton County High trackman, finished second to Requadt, running 22:03. William Garcia, a sophomore on the Lowndes High cross-country team, placed third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 22:30. Billy Taylor was the first master runner in the race and the fifth male finisher, sixth overall in 23:52.

Tracey Cole of Pinetta, Florida was the runner-up on the women's side, placing seventh overall in 23:55. Fourteen-year-old Valdosta athlete Victoria Garcia was the third woman in the 5K and sixteenth overall in 26:08. Tracey Musson was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, 24th overall in 27:38.

77 athletes finished the 2019 Azalea 5K, more than in any year since 2013. The race was hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority, and A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
