Leonardo Canete and Averi Lewis were swift in Swamp Forest

From 2021 to 2023, Bobby York directed the Summer Trail Race Series for Tallahassee, Florida's Gulf Winds Track Club three times. In each of those three years, the Series included the Swamp Forest Trail 7K. Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete won two of those Swamp Forest Races. As of Saturday morning, 20 July 2024, you can add one to each of those numbers. That was the morning that Canete posted his third Swamp Forest 7K win, climbing the hills and hurdling the roots in 29:15. In that same race, Averi Lewis became a two-time Swamp Forest 7K women's champ, defending her 2023 title with a 37:17, good for thirteenth overall.

Leonardo Canete wasn't the only one with Trail Series wins on his resume when the athletes gathered in Tallahassee's Phipps Park for the Swamp Forest 7K, the third race in this year's series. Daniel Wurgler was also in the field, and Wurgler had outrun Canete plus over a hundred others in 2021 to win the Cadillac Trail 9K. Since then, though, Canete had finished first in nine out of thirteen Series events--and after the Swamp Forest Trail Race, ten out of fourteen. This time out, Canete took first by almost a minute, his 29:15 earning his second Series win of the 2024 season as well as his tenth all-time.


Wurgler took second in 30:10. Kyle Kraeft, making his fifteenth appearance in a Trail Series race, placed third in 31:59.

In the women's division, Averi Lewis' win was her fourth in the Summer Trail Series--Alyson Churchill and Emily Molen are the only women who have more Series race titles, with five each.


Michelle Rind placed runner-up to Lewis in the women's standings, coming in nineteenth overall in 39:44. Trail series regular Signe Ulsamer was the first woman master in the race and the third female finisher, placing 22nd overall in 40:40.

Gulf Winds Track Club's eleventh Summer Trail Race Series concludes on Saturday morning, 24 August 2024, at Maclay Gardens State Park with the Overstreet Trail 9K.
