Leonardo Canete and Carrie Murphy add their names to Pine Run history

Even though it has been around since 1977, Gulf Winds Track Club's Pine Run isn't the oldest cross-country race in the Tallahassee, Florida area. At twenty kilometers, it isn't the longest either. Nor is it the largest. But it's the one and only Pine Run, which trumps any superlative you can come up with. It was the only race ever run in International Paper's Southlands Experimental Forest. The Pine Run moved out of Southlands in 2006, and in 2008 it became the only race ever run at Tall Timbers Research Station. It was at the latter venue on Saturday morning, 14 October 2023, that Leonardo Canete became the 44th champion of the Pine Run; the Tallahassee master runner covered the twenty-kilometer course in 1:19:41. Another Tallahassee master runner, Carrie Murphy, won the women's title that morning, placing 27th overall in 1:40:27.


It was Canete's third time racing the Pine Run, but his first Pine Run win. He had placed second in the 2021 race and fourth in 2022. Caden Vandermeulen, an undergraduate at Florida State University at Panama City, was runner-up to Canete, running 1:21:48. Crawfordville master runner Mike Tercyak took third in 1:24:21.


Pensacola, Florida master runner Julie Fink took second in the women's standings, placing 30th overall in 1:42:08. A Tallahassee master runner, Laura McDermott, was the third woman and 37th overall in 1:48:12.


158 athletes finished the 2023 Pine Run 20K, the most since 2016, when 181 completed the 12.4 miles. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the event.

From 1977 to 2006 the race was run at International Paper's Southlands Experimental Forest south of Bainbridge, Georgia. From 2008 to 2023 the race has been run at Tall Timbers Research Station at the north end of Leon County, Florida.
