Hot times at a cold Bowlegs 5K for Johnson and Sherron

"This is a great race," said Vince Molosky. "I always enjoy Bowlegs."

If anyone had reason to enjoy Gulf Winds Track Club's Bowelegs 5K Run For Scholarship, it was Molosky. Since 2008 he had run the race eight times, winning twice and taking second four times. On Saturday morning, 13 January 2018, when he took the starting line of the 34th annual Bowlegs 5K, Molosky was the race's defending champion. But Charlie Johnson got the victory that day, running 16:15 and finishing nearly 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Katie Sherron was the top woman in the race, placing fifteenth overall in 18:59.

Johnson hadn't had a lot of experience with the Bowlegs. He had only run the race once previously, placing seventh in 2016 with a 17:15. Nevertheless, shortly after the 9:00 AM start of the 2018 Bowlegs, it was Johnson who took the lead. That lead grew as he raced through Innovation Park, leaving the rest of the field behind. In spite of running alone the whole way, Johnson finished the course in 16:15--a minute faster than his earlier Bowlegs effort, and his fastest 5K road time since the 2012 Palace Saloon 5K.

Behind Johnson, Vince Molosky and Tristan Cravello dueled for second place. While they battled, they were stalked by by Chris O'Kelley.

"During the first and second mile I was running with Vince," said Cravello. "I got away from him after the uphill. I heard footsteps near the end and I thought it was Vince coming back, but it was Chris."

Kelley had charged past Molosky a few hundred meters from the finish line, then set his sights on Cravello. Cravello managed to hold him off, running 16:59 to O'Kelley's 17:00. Molosky was a few steps back, fourth in 17:04. Gary Droze, a three-time Bowlegs champion, was the fastest master runner in the race, ninth overall in 18:13.

Katie Sherron was another runner with a lot of Bowlegs experience, having run the race six times and winning the women's division twice before 2018. Her 18:59 in the 2018 event was her fastest Bowlegs yet, earning her a third Bowlegs title. After some back-and-forth throughout the race, Brittney Barnes edged Jillian Heddaeus for the women's runner-up spot, 20:25 to 20:30. Barnes placed 30th overall and Heddaeus 32nd. Kenya Rich was the top woman master and tenth female finisher, 55th overall in 22:55.
