Avenger and Grimme flatten their foes in a Dawg-Gone Good Race

It's often interesting to delve into the history of south Georgia road races. A few of them have been around for quite some time--maybe not as old as Atlanta's Peachtree Road Race, but going back into the "Running Boom" years of the 1970s and 1980s. Among the winners from all those years you'll occasionally turn up an interesting name, like University of Georgia standout Mabry Macray, or Valdosta State distance runner Gary Slayton, or even U.S. Olympic marathoner John Tuttle.


You can't always find that history, though. The Dawg-Done Good Road Race 5K in Lakeland, Georgia has been around for a number of years, but it's probably not as old as the festival that it's associated with, the Flatlanders Frolic, which turned 41 this year. However old the race is, good luck finding out who the winners were for each year. What is clear, though, is that the 2011 Dawg-Gone Good Road Race 5K was won by Valdosta's Masked Avenger in 17:37, beating out runner-up Matt Triick of Valdosta and Lanier County High School distance runner Clyde Foster, Jr. Nashville, Georgia's seemingly ageless Dorian Osborne was the top master finisher, eighth overall in 21:55 and 71 years old. Erin Grimme of Nashville, Georgia was first in the women's division, placing 19th overall in 25:11 and finishing over 160 meters ahead of women's runner-up, Lakeland's Angie Owens (21st, 26:03). Linda Wood of Valdosta was the third woman in and the top woman master, 22nd overall in 26:27.


Lakeland, Georgia is also the host of the Milltown Motorcade 5K, part of the town's annual Milltown Motorcade celebration each April. As far as I can tell, the Motorcade is just another excuse to have a parade, eat corndogs and funnel cakes, and hold a road race--much like the Flatlanders Frolic.
