Somehow the Georgia Peanut Festival got along for 15 years without a road race. Then in 1979, the 16th year, a 10,000-meter run was added. And why not? After all, in addition to being the home of the Peter Pan Peanut Butter and the Georgia Peanut Festival, Sylvester, Georgia, had also been the site of Georgia's first marathon, way back back in 1912. Over the years the Peanut Run shrank in distance to a 5K, and in 2012 the race wasn't held at all. Nevertheless the Peanut Run has endured over more than three decades, and athletes gathered in Sylvester on Saturday morning, 18 October 2014, for the 35th running of the event.Brittney Skiles was the first of 52 athletes across the finish line, not just the top woman but the overall winner. The head cross-country coach at Georgia Southwestern State University, Skiles covered the 3.1-mile course in 21:01. Master runner Lorenzo Gomez was the runner-up and the first male finisher, running 22:15. Cindy Gaskin was the top female master, the second woman finisher and ninth overall in 27:11.
