Walker and Schjott lead LakeFest

In DeFuniak Springs, Florida returning master runners ruled the fourth annual LakeFest 5K. Baker, Florida master runner Bob Walker successfully defended his 2016 title at the Saturday morning, 20 May 2017, race, winning the event in 18:57. Freeport, Florida master runner Tia Schjott had been fourth in the women's standings of the 2016 LakeFest 5K, but she came back to DeFuniak Springs in 2017 and won the women's title, placing fifth overall in 24:20.


For Bob Walker, it was an improvement of nearly half a minute on his performance in the previous year's LakeFest, where he had posted a winning time of 19:24. Behind Walker, master runner David Griffin of Panama City Beach, Florida was the runner-up in 21:24. Pensacola, Florida master runner Jay Cornelius took third in 22:38.


Like Walker, women's champ Tia Schjott also improved on her 2016 LakeFest 5K time. Schjott had run 24:46 in the third annual race. Kimberly Floyd of Enterprise, Alabama was the second woman and seventh overall in 26:07. Fort Walton Beach, Florida athlete Jacquelyn Evans was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 30:32.


38 runner finished the 2017 LakeFest 5K. All proceeds of the race went to the Walton County Prevention Coalition. Race Crewe timed the event.

Bob Walker and Mackenzie Paul take the Reindeer Race 10K

Panama City Junior League's Reindeer RaceIt was 8:00 AM on Saturday morning, 12 December 2015, in Panama City Beach, Florida, when the Panama City Junior League's Reindeer Run 10K started. It was just seconds after that when Bob Walker took the lead. After two laps around a five-kilometer loop through St. Andrews State Park the master runner from Baker, Florida, was still in the lead. Walker had won the 6.2-mile race in 39:19. Not far behind him, Panama City Beach master runner Richard Lombard took second in 39:33. Kurtis Grabner edged Marion Conley for third, 46:56 to 46:59, in a duel between two Panama City master runners.


Mackenzie Paul of Memphis, Tennessee, was the women's champ, placing sixth overall in 48:25. Panama City Beach's April Hantzis was runner-up in the women's field, finishing tenth overall in 49:58. Third in the women's standings went to Erin Winn of Panama City, twelfth overall in 52:08. Susanne Moore of Pinson, Alabama, was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, fourteenth overall in 53:25. 39 athletes finished the 10K at the 2015 Reindeer Race.

It was the sixth annual Reindeer Race, but only the most recent two events have included the 10K. The 5K, though, goes all the way back to the first Reindeer Race in 2010. In the 2015 5K Zack McFarland, an eighth-grader on the Port Saint Joe High cross country team, took a wrong turn near the mile mark, but still managed to lead the race for the first two miles. But at the end of the second mile, Fort Walton Beach athlete Brittany Rucker overtook McFarland. With Rucker leading, Grand Ridge master runner Mark McCarra challenged McFarland for second. Running together, McCarra and McFarland started to close on Rucker. With a kilometer to go, three runners were fighting for the lead.


"With 500 meters left, I swear they saw a building and thought they were done," McCarra recalled. "Both slowed when they realized it wasn't the end, but I got by them and thank goodness they let me go."


McCarra got the win in 20:55. Rucker won the women's title, finishing runner-up in 21:07. McFarland was third in 21:18.


116 athletes finished the 5K.
