Hill and Pennymon reap laurels at the Shamrock

On Saturday evening, 18 March 2017, athletes gathered once again in downtown Americus, Georgia for the seventh annual Shamrock Jog And Jam 5K. And when the 3.1-mile road race was over, Jaren Hill had won, running 21:08. Americus master runner Charlene Pennymon was the women's champ, placing sixth overall in 23:43. 81 athletes finished the race.


Jaren Hill had run cross-country for Americus-Sumter High, graduating from the school in 2015. Mitchell Sinyard was the fastest master runner in the Jog And Jam, finishing second just behind Hill in 21:30. Kevin Richmond of Cobb, Georgia edged Chris Phillips for third, 22:36 to 22:37.


For Charlene Pennymon it was her second Shamrock Jog And Jam 5K title, joining the win she posted in the 2015 race. Master runner Laura Dudley of Buena Vista, Georgia was the women's runner up and tenth overall in 24:12. Emily Phillips, an eighth-grader on the Lee Middle School cross-country team, was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 25:04.


The Shamrock Jog And Jam benefits the Scott Law Foundation, which provides direct financial assistance to Sumter and surrounding county residents suffering from cancer or other medical ailments.

Calcutt and Pennymon are over the fence at the Home Run 5K

Crossing the finish line more than 70 meters ahead of the next runner, Billy Calcutt ran 19:23 to win the third annual Home Run 5K in Americus, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 13 June 2015. It was the second Home Run 5K win for Calcutt, a rising junior on Southland Academy's GISA state champion cross country team. Calcutt had also won the race in 2013, and placed third in 2014.


Second place went to the fastest master runner in the race, Tony Edmondson of Griffin, Georgia. Edmondson covered the 3.1-mile course in 19:40, the fastest time posted by a master runner at the Home Run 5K in the three-year history of the race. Danville, Kentucky, master runner Keith Stillwell finished third overall in 21:06, and William Hancock of Leesburg, Georgia, was fourth in 21:21. Alex Arnold, a recent graduate of Southland Academy, placed fifth in 22:34.


Americus master runner Charlene Pennymon won the women's title at the 2015 Home Run 5K, coming in ninth overall in 22:55. Jacklyn Hatcher of Buford, Georgia, was the women's runner-up, finishing 26th overall in 29:04.


80 athletes finished the race. The 2015 Home Run 5K was a benefit for the Americus Campus of the Methodist Children's Home of South Georgia.

Wilson and Pennymon are front runners at the Riverfront Run

Finishing nearly 400 meters ahead of the next runner, Austin Wilson won the 5K Riverfront Run in Albany, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 4 October 2014. The Atlanta, Georgia, athlete's winning time in the 3.1-mile race on the Flint River Greenway was 19:16. Jason Stojka of Leesburg, Georgia was the runner-up in 20:52. Jamie Kiep of Albany was third in 21:07. Michael Gebhardt of Duluth, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 22:45.


Americus, Georgia master runner Charlene Pennymon took the women's 5K title at the Riverfront Run for the third year in a row; this time she was tenth overall in 23:34. Ashley Barrow of Albany was second in the women's standings, coming in 12th overall in 24:00. The third female finisher was Albany's Billie Rankin, 14th overall in 24:41.


128 athletes finished the 2014 Riverfront Run 5K. The annual race is hosted by the Dougherty County Medical Society, with proceeds used to benefit the Darton State College Foundation. Event Tech provided timing for the 2014 race.

Fast times on the Flint for Ramirez and Pennymon

At Albany's sixth annual Riverfront 5K on Saturday morning, 5 October 2013, six of the first ten finishers were master runners. But at the very top, youth was triumphant, with under-twenty athletes taking the first three places. 18-year-old Angel Ramirez won the 3.1-mile event, posting a 19:20. 15-year-old Daniel Ledford took the runner-up spot in 19:44, and 17-year-old Fletcher White was third in 20:16. After that, Albany master runner Michael Gavre put an end to the parade of youth, finishing fourth in 20:28.


The master runners were fully triumphant on the women's side. 2012 champion Charlene Pennymon repeated as first woman; the Americus master runner was 19th overall in 23:10. Close behind Pennymon, Thomasville's Beverly Hamilton was runner-up in the women's standings, 21st overall in 23:18. Karla Spurlin (25th, 24:05) of Leesburg, Georgia, was the third female finisher, and ten-year-old Anna James (30th, 24:24) of Albany was the fourth.


201 athletes finished the race, which took them along the Flint River Greenway and though the Oxford Nature Trail. The annual event is presented by the Dougherty County Medical Society, and a portion of the proceeds go to the Darton College Foundation. Timing services were provided by Event Tech.
